Fr. 73 $5 1880 Fold Over Obstruction

In the days when this 1880 $5 Legal Tender was issued the presses were much slower and the sheets had many fewer notes, only four per sheet. Sometime between the second and third printing this crazy fold over occurred. Most of the seal is technically printed on the back but with part of the seal missing. I pause to say whether it's an obstruction or just caused by the difference in paper thickness. This is pretty much as cool visually as I have seen. When I offered this in August 2000 it realized $18,700 in spirited competition.
