Rare Maryland "Red Money" Note

Colonial Currency > Maryland

MD-130 5 Shillings May 10, 1781
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20     PCGS
Always an issue that has been coveted for both its rarity as well as its eye appeal. Known as 'Red Money' due to its obvious red printed border, which in this case is quite broad on all sides. PCGS notes restorations, minor stains and enhanced signatures. From the back this note looks squarely XF and the state coat of arms is one of the most sharply printed that your cataloger has had the pleasure of seeing. Newman sets the value at $7,500 in VF and we can understand why; this is an excruciatingly difficult series from which to obtain quality notes. Before this note, the last example we have seen was a PCGS Apparent Fine 12 with missing pieces which realized $1,380 about four years ago. This note will do far better.
Current Bid: $ 1,500.00

Estimate: ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
