Tied with one other as the nicest graded example we have seen of this illustrious black and white Proof. Four HPCs are seen along the signature lines and the paper quality is nothing short of flawless. Huge margins and superior centering account for the very high assigned grade. The central vignette shows women working on the loom while the lower left oval portrait features Charles Sumner. Sumner was a staunch opponent of slavery and a couple of days following a rather incendiary speech on the Senate floor he was met by Preston Brooks who proceeded to give him a wooden shampoo that resulted in a three year recovery period.
