$2 2003 I Minneapolis I-A Obstructed Printing with Retained Nylon Thread

We sold this note in March, 2005 at CPMX with the following lot description: "This is the first public offering of any $2 bill with this error, which merits an R-9 rating in Frederick J. Bart's book on errors. This note has a blue nylon fiber or thread embedded into the paper. It was there before the second and third printings. It caught part of the inking and then moved very slightly away leaving a blank void, which is especially visible under low power magnificaton or young eyes. The thread measures 3/4" long and lies atop the "T" in TWO and extends towards the green Treasury seal. By some miracle, the nylon thread remains attached to the note creating an obstructed print with retained fragment on a Deuce! According to reliable sources only one other example exists and it resides in a very advanced West Coast collection. If rarity alone determined the final price of this lot, very few collectors could afford it. As it is, when the bidding stops one extremely fortunate collector will add a very important note to his holdings without spending a fortune." Well, we were spot on with everything, except our estimate. Back in 2005, the note brought $5,290 on a presale estimate of $500-1,000. We're going to try the same estimate tonight and see where bidding stops.
