The First National Bank of Portsmouth was the first bank chartered in the state and this represents one of the earliest notes, with a charter number from the 1873 to 1875 era. There are 40 large notes reported with 15 First Charters, mostly $1s and a single Deuce. The signatures on this example are penned and excellent, truly enhancing the note. The last sale was an Ace in 2007 at $4,025. From the David Davis Collection.
