Clearfield was incorporated as a borough in 1840 and is the seat of Clearfield County. In addition to being the county seat, Clearfield's success was helped greatly by its access to three railroads, the Pennsylvania, the New York Central & Hudson, and the Buffalo, Rochester & Pittsburgh. Amazingly, there are two $50 Brownbacks known on this bank but no $5s, until now. There has not been an early charter note offered on this bank in decades. Group 1. Plate date 2/7/85.
