Fr. 765/727 $2/$1 1918 Chicago Double Denomination
Grade:
PMG VG 8 Net
All inappropriate references aside, the United States did print a three-dollar bill, although in error. We are pleased to offer an affordable example of this rarity. The front of this shows the $2 1918 FRBN; the back, however, displays the Green Eagle intended for the Ace in this series, rather than the expected Battleship. According to Frederick J. Bart, new research has uncovered that the $2/$1 double denominations were all printed from back plate #256. Apparently a small group of uncut sheets of the $1 back design got advanced to the printing presses for the $2 fronts and were printed for four different districts! There are less than 10 known $2/$1 double denominations, so the opportunity to acquire one doesn t come often enough, nor cheap enough. There are no confirmed examples above VF and most are clustered around Fine, so this VG doesn t fall far behind the crowd. The assigned PMG VG 8 Net seems spot on; a couple of tiny wear holes are noted at the junction of the folds and the comment of small holes seems justified, however, the comment "trimmed" mystifies us. The 2nd Edition of the Bart reference on errors (2003), lists this at $17,500 in Fine and we don t imagine that there s any real price difference between the two grades.
