Fr. 343 $100 1891
Grade:
PCGS Apparent VF 30
Monroes are among the scarcest design types and the Fr. 343 is tremendously more rare than the Fr. 344. There are only five notes possibly finer than this example, with an overall eye-appeal bordering on AU. The margins are abundant and the red seal remains vibrant. A few areas with surface rust were camouflaged by a skilled artisan leading to the comment "rust stains painted over". Rarities often trade at multiples of Greensheet, even during softer markets. Also, the sheet reflects prices for the most common Friedberg number and offers no premium for more rare signature varieties. As I catalogue this lot, the current Greensheet value is $20,000 in VF-20. This lot contains a VF-30 (not 20) on the much more rare Friedberg number and opens well below Greensheet. The more common Fr. 344 in PCGS VF-35 realized $54,625 in our Memphis 2007 sale. PCGS notes rust stains painted over.
