The black charter number is the most unusual and rarest of all variations that can be found as printed by the Federal Government. Only 41 examples are currently known to exist. The following explanation of black charter numbers comes from National Bank Notes - The Fourth Edition by Don C. Kelly and reads as follows, "A rare charter number variety appears on $5 notes of the Original Series and Series of 1875 issues for a few banks. These rare notes are referred to as black charter number notes. They were printed from plates which had the charter number engraved on the face plate. The charter number, like the rest of the engraved face design, appears in black. Research by Huntoon, Raymond and Hickman (1984) revealed that the black charter number plates originated at the Continental Bank Notes Co. between November 15, 1873 and May 15, 1874. Black charter number notes printed by the Continental Bank Note Co. were Original Series. In 1875 all Continental plates were transferred to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The Bureau altered the plates by adding its logo and by changing the Treasury signatures. Most black charter number notes known to collectors are Series 1875, and were produced at the Bureau." This note is from a popular Berks County location that has five known black charters. Only the Central City, Colorado Territory appears very often. This note is evenly circulated with excellent pen signatures. Two edge splits have been professionally restored.
