These early Gold Certificates are not just rare, but they look rare due to the intriguing brown serial numbers. The Fr. 1188 has just eight notes in the census. That is four notes less than the Fr. 1189a, a triple-signature gold note. This example first appeared in our 2008 Memphis sale, having just been found in a safe-deposit box. Only four other examples have had public appearances over the last 20 years, and two of those are now in permanent collections. Some edge splits and such have been fixed with consummate skill, earning this rarity an Apparent VF 20 grade. If you are looking for a rare note that will likely stay that way, this is it.
