This is the seat of Montgomery County in rural Southwest Virginia, about 30 miles south of Roanoke. It was an important commercial center for the Confederacy during the Civil War, as its remote location kept it out of the reach of Federal troops. This is a very scarce large example, one of just four such examples reported from here. This one is circulated but attractive, with light but legible signatures.
