10˘ Mail Contractor, Independence

These were issued for a mail route from Independence to Kansas City for the Roberts' Stage Line. Preston Roberts, Sr. was said to be a promoter of great enterprises in 1857. He received a contract covering the post offices on both sides of the Missouri River, from Jefferson City to St. Joseph and from Iron Mountain Railroad Terminus to Little Rock, Arkansas. In 1858 he moved to Independence, Missouri and in 1861 purchased the interest of Hall and Porter in the Santa Fe Trail route. In 1864 he helped open the First National Bank of Independence and was president until it closed in 1878. This note has some tape and a piece replaced.
