$1-1-2-3 Kirtland Safety Society Bank Uncut Sheet
Grade:
AU
When the Kirtland Society Bank was planned by Joseph Smith, Jr. he thought the notes would eventually be "as good as gold." Apparently the bank was organized late in 1864, during Andrew Jackson's banking crisis, but the initial banking charter was denied. Joseph Smith, Jr. was president and Sidney Rigdon the cashier. The bank closed in November 1837. This sheet, printed by Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty in Philadelphia, is one of very few unsigned remainders that are known to have survived. I believe Harry Jones of Cleveland turned these up nearly 30 years ago, and I can find no recent offerings. This is an unissued remainder uncut sheet that has one tattered edge and an evenly margined left edge, but no signatures.
