Marshalltown had four different National Banks during the note issuing period and all are rare, with only the earliest bank, First National Bank #411, ever appearing for sale. That bank closed in 1928. In fact, none of the banks issued small size notes. Before now the Farmers National Bank was the only other bank to have a known note, but only one note. This bank was the town's latest chartered bank, in 1890, and it lasted until 1908. There were 4,478 sheets of $5 Brownbacks issued and 980 $10-10-10-20 sheets as well. Until now, this bank was absolutely unknown. Each of these two notes are virtually identical and they are only one serial number apart, #953 and #955. These beautiful notes, with excellent centering, have picture perfect pen signatures of F.S. Williams, President and D.T. Deumead, Cashier. There is a hint of a centerfold and a corner bed or two, along with a pinhole. They are fully original and have gorgeous, lightly subdued paper quality that adds character to the quality we wish all Nationals had. These notes were discovered in a Kansas farm auction earlier this year.
