Lot #2612 - Amsterdam, First NB, 1307

Likely Third Finest In Private Hands

National Bank Notes > New York

Amsterdam, First NB, 1307
Fr. 454 $100 Original
Grade: VF/XF
We all know that $100 First Charters are few and far between but once in the early 1980s I had 12 at the same time. What a day that was! There are definitely two notes known that are graded higher than this note, a Raleigh National Bank of North Carolina graded Ch. AU 58 and the Blackstone National Bank of Boston graded AU 53 by PCGS. No other $100s have been called XF except this note which is ungraded. I believe it's a VF 35 or XF 40 Apparent as it has had some splits restored along the edges. The centering and color are excellent for the grade and the signatures are bold, black and readable. This is better than all but two Original Series and the 1875 Series. Twelve of the 54 known 1875 Series are in institutions. Of the 42 left to consider it appears 10 could be equal to or better than this note. Anyway you slice the pie, this is a fresh, lovely slice of it in every way.
