$1,000 Dec. 15, 1840 The Bank of the United States Post Note

This is only 32 serial numbers away from the infamous reprints. There is a corner tip fold, but otherwise it appears Gem. I have long thought these were undervalued. These were used to raise coin in Europe. The notes matured in 1841 but because the bank was unable to pay them, it became insolvent. This post note is payable at the New York branch and has four payment stamps on the back.
