Spectacular Ovid Brown Back

National Bank Notes > Michigan

Ovid, First NB, 3264
Fr. 467 $5 1882BB
Grade: VF +
This charter was established in 1884. There are only two notes reported and we sold the other as part of the Power Collection where that note was described as "Ovid resides in Clinton County and was incorporated in 1858, with the construction of a rail depot within the township. Ovid was never a large town, but was prosperous nonetheless, with several independent businesses, mills and one bank, founded in 1868. When CAA auctioned the Charles Colver estate in 1999, they remarked that they felt this note was the single neatest item in his state set. It is certainly a candidate for that position in the Power Collection as well. The bank is incredibly rare, having issued $5 Brown Backs only over a 13 year period, before liquidating in 1897. It was the only bank in town, and by 1910 just $370 remained outstanding. Only one other note is reported, most likely the substantially lower grade piece that was offered in a 1974 Jess Peters sale. That piece has not reappeared in years. The Kaleidoscope tombstone only gilds the lily. Signatures of E. DuCamp, Vice President, and Horace Keys, Cashier". This lovely note was acquired from the Lee DeGood Collection. The Dr. Wallace Lee Collection.
