Grade: PMG Graded     PMG
This is the first set of Proofs issued for this new series on December 21, 1914 according to the enclosed letter that was written to McAdoo, dated October 28, 1914. The letter to McAdoo reads as follows, "My dear Mr. Secretary: I have the honor to present you herewith, suitably framed, the first die proof impression of the face and back of the $5 federal reserve notes for the Richmond Bank first. These plates went to press this morning, and on Saturday morning I shall begin delivery of $500,000 in 5s for this Bank; on Monday I shall deliver $1,200,000 for the Richmond Bank and at least $1,000,000 for Atlanta. I shall finish the delivery of the 5s for the Richmond Bank on Wednesday, and the 5s for the Atlanta Bank on Friday, but commencing Wednesday I shall begin deliveries of 5s at the rate of $1,000,000 a day for Dallas and St. Louis. I shall begin the delivery of the $10 notes about the 6th of November and will complete them as rapidly as the 5s. I expect to make a substantial delivery for New York before the 15th of next month. On or about the 15th, I expect to be delivering the federal reserve notes to the Comptroller to the extent of $6,000,000 a day. It is my intention to have mounted a sufficient number of die proof impressions of all denominations, similar to those presented to you today, for your use, as the Comptroller, Mr. Williams, suggested that it would be very appropriate for you to present President Wilson and the Members of the Federal Reserve Board specimen of these notes, which I consider the most artistic ever issued by the United States Government. At the same time, we have incorporated in the designs of these notes all the essential technical features that would further circumvent counterfeiting. Respectively yours, Joseph E. Ralph". This collection is a much finer quality than the set we sold for John Whitney Walter which had some damage from light. The notes in this set are graded very high and are very pretty.
