During the early part of the 1970s there were few collectors for high denomination National Bank Notes but Doug Corrigan was already on the hunt for notes to add to his collection. One day he was visiting Superior Stamp & Coin in downtown Los Angeles when a rather proper older woman walked into the store with a group of mostly $50s and $100s from the Pacific National Bank of Los Angeles #12454. When she spoke to the counter person he heard her say "I went to AMark and they made an acceptable offer for these notes but they wanted to write me a check and I felt it was wrong to take a check for cash money". The counter person agreed and brought her the cash. She indicated she was keeping the #1 notes and we must assume they are still in Mrs. Smith's family. After she left the store Doug acquired two of each denomination for about $30 over face, as the story was told to me. His #8 notes are offered here. Note signed by E.M. Smith, President and A.M. DeLong, Cashier. The Pacific National Bank of Los Angeles in California wash chartered in October 1923 and liquidated on March 18, 1930. The bank, located at 650 South Olive, printed $1,858,600 of National Currency in six different types and denominations.
