Portland Canal Bank $1
Grade:
XF/AU
Haxby ME-430 G16c. SENC. April 1, 1862. This bank eventually became the Canal National Bank of Portland, charter number 941. An interesting design with evocative vignettes, larger red "ONE" protector at upper right, and a smoky locomotive seen at back center. We have only seen one other example for sale in the past several years. That was a low grade VG note that topped the $500 mark a couple of years ago. This note is quarter folded and as pretty as we can imagine any surviving examples on this bank would be.
