This bank has only three surviving notes from their first order of Brown Backs from the BEP, and this note is far and away the finest of those three. In fact, the other two would be ugly ducklings as compared to this peach. Nortonville is located in Jefferson County and the town was named for L. Norton, Jr., the road master for the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. The town was formed in 1873 before the county in 1880. This bank note was pen signed by O.W. Babcock and while J.W. Harris was the cashier of record this must have been an assistant who signed this nearly vanity signature. There are only 10 large notes reported and nearly none of this quality or desirability. Previously from our 2011 sale where it realized $2,760.
