Military scrip; emergency issue to cover salaries and expenses. In 1856, Costa Rica declared war on famous American adventurer William Walker, President of Nicaragua. Walker is the ONLY American ever to be elected as president of a foreign nation. Costa Rica invaded Nicaragua in March 1856 and after a year long war, finally ousted Walker with assistance from Cornelius Vanderbilt in May 1857. This military scrip was issued to pay Costa Rican soldiers in promissory money to be collected after the war. This uniface scrip shows the soldier's name, salary for the first campaign, and seal of "General Headquarters". Issued by Commander of Costa Rican Army General Jose Joaquin Mora (brother of the President of Costa Rica between 1849 and 1859). Some thins at left affecting neither next nor stamping. Rare.
