Early Tobacco Note! Astounding find, a stunning discovery in 2003 according to a Bank Note Reporter article by Paul Green; article contained in lot. Research indicates these to be legitimate issues of the Tobacco Factory, an official arm of the Costa Rican government. They are also considered to represent the first paper money emission of the country. The Tobacco Factory was the sole source for military and public works payments. Text on the note indicates a price of 3 Reales per pound of tobacco. These vales could be exchanged for gold, silver or some commodities. Few small holes at left; slit at upper center. A formidable addition worthy of the finest collections. One expert states only four known; we offer two pieces, one each in this and the following lot. A great way to kick off this outstanding collection.
