This rare Ulster County bank has just seven large notes reported. The paper is toned, but this Value Back retains considerable crispness. When last auctioned in 2004, the note was described as having stains along the bottom. The more precise story is much more interesting, I think. Close inspection reveals that the note appears to have been previously signed in red ink. The signatures were removed or washed away, and then over stamped with the proper officers' signatures. These stamped signatures match those seen on other notes from the bank, so I feel they were contemporary. Sometimes the story behind the notes is half the fun of collecting.
