Boss Tweed King of Tammary Hall
National Bank Notes > New York
Mount Vernon, East Chester NB, 1772
Fr. 382 $1 Original
Grade:
PMG VF 30
This bank's notoriety was missed when offered in the Bowers Collection. There are 12 large notes reported from this First Charter bank before it moved to Indiana. This note is signed by Boss Tweed, William M. Tweed, a member of the US House of Representatives from 1853 to 1855. He was the Boss of Tamma, NY Hall, the Democratic Party machine that many say ran New York state and city politics. He was, at one time, the third largest landowner in New York City. He was convicted of stealing, what in today's dollars would be between one and eight billon. Maybe that's why the bank left the state for Indiana at that time.
