Tied For Finest Graded Ex: Levitan Collection
Large Size Type Notes > Gold Certificates
Fr. 1220 $1,000 1922
Grade:
PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
The 1922 $1,000 Gold Certificate is a beautifully designed and printed note. This, my friends, is tied or equal to a PMG 55 that was sold in January 2013 at the FUN Show for $96,937 and back in 2007 I sold the same note at $92,000. We described this note from the Levitan Collection as follows, "This note was catalogued in Gengerke's 1997 listing of serial numbers, 23 different ones are listed as belonging to private collectors or unlisted. Within those 23 notes, one is listed as CU, while this note and two others are listed as AU. If this note is AU it is certainly one of the finest AUs you could ever find, with good margins, superb color and wonderful paper quality. In retrospect it appears that both types of $1,000 Gold Certificates have been underrated for many years. Most are in lower grade and only three have appeared in auction since 1990. There were 80,000 printed". Now nine more have appeared but no more like this note. If any known are really UNC then I would assume they are in an institutional holding.
