National Bank Notes > Oklahoma
Tahlequah, First NB, 5478
Fr. 633 $10 1902ND
Grade:
VF +
In 1839, Tahlequah was designated the capital of the Cherokee Nation. This bank was the first to open in 1900, followed by four other National Banks. These four institutions were tiny by comparison, and survivors from their issuance are rare or unreported. All had closed by 1929, leaving only the First NB. Although considered the big bank in town, large notes from here are still elusive. Only six state issue notes populate the large size census on this bank, with this attractive VF making it seven. The purple and red stamped signatures are strong. Only a low grade VG has been auctioned twice this century, so collectors should be hungry for a pleasing example such as this. From the Rocky Mountain Collection.
