W.B. Mumford Confederate Items Lot
William Bruce Mumford, a decorated veteran of the Seminole and Mexican American War was most noted for being hanged at the U.S Mint in New Orleans after he captured and brought down the United States Union flag April 26,1862. On April 29, 1862 Union Major General Benjamin Butler arrested William Mumford and on May 30,1862, Mumford was tried before a military tribunal, found guilty of treason and sentenced to be hanged. His death created controversy because New Orleans had not yet fallen to the Union Army. This 69-piece archive consists of correspondence, letters, newspaper articles, and images. A few key components are: a piece of the apple tree where C.S.A General Robert E. Lee surrendered; a piece of the flag that Mr. Mumford tore down from the U.S. Mint in New Orleans; a copy of General Lee s Order No. 9; a Confederate Bond Type 135, and passes for the family to leave the C.S.A. This is an exquisite lot put together by Mr. Mumford's wife and children, documenting the death of Mr. Mumford and his family's travels to Richmond, Washington D.C. and eventually to Kansas City where the children settled.
