Lot #1175 - Hancock, Superior NB, M9087

National Bank Notes > Michigan

Hancock, Superior NB, M9087
Fr. 589 $5 1902RS
Grade: VF
Prior to the discovery of this note, the census of the Superior NB consisted of thirteen 1902 Plain Backs and a healthy supply of various small notes. This Red Seal is the first of the type to surface and as such is the earliest note known on the bank. Organized on February 1, 1908, the bank had just enough time to place their only order for Red Seal sheets before the Aldrich-Vreeland Act of May 30, 1908 mandated that further notes would be 1902 Date Backs. That one order consisted of 625 $5 sheets and 500 $10-$10-$10-$20 sheets. No wonder Red Seals are so rare on this bank. This example is a very nice and evenly circulated note, enhanced by tremendous pen signatures. An exciting find for the Michigan collector. From the Rocky Mountain Collection.
