Office of the Assistant Treasurer of the United States $10,000 186_
Grade:
VF/XF
This Certificate of Deposit is a remainder dated 186_ and was 'signed', or scribbled to cancel the item. These notes were clearing house notes and not for circulation. This is the nicest example I recall seeing. These were issued by Assistant Treasurers for deposits of not less than $100 for a term of more than 30 days. These certificates of deposit earned 5% per annum and had to be turned in to get your money back and for this reason, few remain. Hessler catalog number: X134E. Hessler gives this number his highest rarity rating of R8, with 1 to 3 known. The left vignette is of a Civil War soldier in zouave dress and the center vignette is of The Eagle's Nest.
