There are not many banks in New York that remain unreported, so when a note surfaces on one of these institutions, it creates quite a stir. The Bowery National Bank was chartered in 1865 and founded by William R. Foster and Richard Hamilton. Hamilton served as cashier and signed the note we offer here. The bank was initially located at 60 Bowery at the south corner of Canal Street. A year later it moved to 62 Bowery where it remained for three and a half decades. The Bowery National Bank closed in January 1889 and joined the state banking system as the Bowery Bank of New York. In 1902, a new building was completed for the bank at 124 Bowery, which stands today. This $10 1875 Series note has clear pen signatures and is free of any significant damage. It is hard to estimate what a rarity such as this will bring in today's market, but similar unique items from New York City have reached well into the five figures. Regardless of cost, one lucky bidder will go home with a note he will be proud to own.
