Here is a gorgeous $10 Plain Back that is far better than any of the known six notes. The signatures are there but I can see only remnants. Excellent paper quality and just a tiny rounded corner. ---- Paonia was founded by Samuel Wade, a rancher and owner of the first general store in the town. He secured the post office and suggested Paeonia, the botanical term for the peony flower. The officials in Washington dropped the "e" to form Paonia. The North Fork Valley was the home of the Ute Indians until 1880 when the Ute Indian Reservation was closed by the federal government following the Meeker Massacre. In that same year Wade arrived with William Clark and Enos Hotchkiss. Today most of the town residents are employed in the fruit industry or the coal business.
