Lovely Morris Note

Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates

Fr. 289 $10 1880
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58 Apparent     PCGS
The Morris note has always been a very popular type and in the 1990s and early 2000s uncirculated examples appeared fairly often, but it appears now that most of those CUs are in strong hands. The emphasis has now shifted to the AU notes, because of both affordability and opportunity. This attractive AU is from a run of about 50 Choice to Gem examples, most of which were last sold decades ago. This note could easily be offered as a Ch. Uncirculated, for it is that nice. The embossing is cavernous, with even some design features from the front showing in relief on the back. The centering is worthy of a Choice note and there is minor teller handling, but without smudges. The reason for the AU grade is anyone's guess as I can find no corner folds or bends in the note. As for the 'Apparent, Small Edge Repairs', PCGS is correct but you will have to have a sharp eye to see them. There are two spots in the back top margin that the paper is thin, probably caused by the removal of an old mounting. The spots were repaired, and can only be picked up easily by candling the note. Today's repair methods are superior and would likely make these spots disappear completely. Keep in mind, these are thin spots, not tears, and as such are not visible on the front. Quite scarce in this condition, in spite of the minor faults.
