Canada Hudson Bay Co. 5 Shillings Sterling

November 15, 1820. S1096a. HBC paper money was issued only by the York Factory, beginning about 1820 and ending around 1850. The 4-3/4" x 9-5/8" notes were made in 1 Shilling, 5 Shillings and 1 Pound denominations for York Factory employees engaged in work other than fur trapping. It was accepted throughout the Territory of Tuperts Land (Manitoba), West Central Canada, as far south as St. Paul, Minnesota and as far west as San Francisco, California. These elaborately engraved notes, called 'Hudson Bay Blankets', were payable 60 days after sight at Hudson Bay House in London.
