Grade:
PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
When we sold the John Whitney Walter specimen of the iconic $10 1934-plain North Africa, we couldn't fathom that an equal might possibly exist. Subsequently that note was sent for third-party grading and now stands alone as the finest slabbed. From the outside of the holder, this piece stands toe-to-toe with the Walter example. The margins are balanced better than on 99% of the examples, the yellow seal is imprinted in deep gold while the serial numbers are striking blue. The paper remains stark white and nary a whisper of handling is noticeable through the slab. None of the 1934-plains come well embossed and this seems equal to any certified CU. Track & Price shows a total population of 13 examples, although a few have higher technical grades it seems doubtful that any could appear aesthetically any nicer, even those that have broken the $20,000 barrier.
