Dated August 10, 1861. A $20 Demand Note rates among the rarest of all notes available to collectors up to the $20 denomination. Records indicate nearly 1 million $20 Demand Notes were printed, with only 22 known survivors on all districts and of those only four are from Boston. This example is the best graded by either service at PMG VF 25. The note has amazing pen signatures and excellent bold coloring. This note was reported in 1993 but there are no sales records as to when it was acquired from the Dean Oakes Collection. We sold a note graded VF 20 in November 2006 at $92,000 and one of the others graded '20' with restoration realized $61,687 in January 2013. The only note sold more recently was a Fr. 11a at $411,250 in January 2014, but that note was hand-signed and unique. This is certainly one of the best problem free examples known.
