Fr. 341 $100 1880
Grade:
PCGS VF 35 Apparent
James Monroe had the good fortune to grace the face of this famous 'Black Back' $100 of which there are only 24 serial numbers recorded. This note is the Krause-Lembke illustration provided by Dean Oakes. Only 19 of the known notes are outside of institutions, mostly government agencies, and it's doubtful they will ever be sold. Eight of those 19 notes are graded slightly higher, with 6 independently. There are even two UNCs, but once again one is in the ANA Museum. Tonight's offering is a beautiful circulated example with a one small edge split that has been perfectly restored, otherwise this beauty has amazing paper quality. There are also a couple of odd folds, but virtually no circulation. The centering, top to bottom and right to left, are outstanding. With so few examples outside of the public domain, chances of acquiring this quality is very slim. In the last eight years there have been four sales, all between $129,250 and $235,000. In June 2006 we sold and XF at $270,250. PCGS notes: minor restoration at left.
