IN the PCDA 2006 sale we wrote: "Founded July 16, 1790, Washington, DC's existence as a federal district was mandated in the Constitution. Although the original area for the planned city came from Maryland and Virginia, the land south of the Potomac River was returned to Virginia in 1847 as a separate city, Alexandria. During the War of 1812, the city was invaded by the British and all but a few of the federal buildings burned, including the White House. In the 1870s, there was a brief territorial government in place in Washington, but Congress removed the governor in favor of direct Congressional government. The District is a slightly more difficult location to find $5 Brown Backs with just 26 pieces recorded from four different banks. Although in lower grade, this was the only note from this bank our consignor was able to find. That makes sense since only two others are reported. Notice the smaller font size for the town and plate date. Group 3, Series Standard. Plate date 8/26/96".
