Holton is located in Jackson County and was named for Edward D. Holton of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He led a party from Milwaukee that selected the town site in 1854 and would eventually be located on a branch of the Union Pacific Railroad. Jackson County is in northeastern Kansas and was named for Andrew Jackson. The first bank in Holton was established in 1872 as the Farmers Bank and Savings Institution. The Kelly census indicates 7 Brown Backs and 2 Plain Backs are known from the NB of Holton, yet his book shows the bank issued Second Charter notes only, liquidating in 1909. In any case, this should be an affordable example on a better bank. Group 3, Series Standard. Plate date 5/14/96. Seven $5 Brown Backs reported.
