United States Notes or Legal Tender Notes were first authorized by Congress on May 3, 1878 and that Act required that the amount of $346,681,106 be maintained. This note was the last $1 produced after the new smaller notes came on the market. Two dollar bills were discontinued in 1966 and $100 notes were issued to maintain the requirements of the Act.
