Cleveland Spencerian National College Bank $1
Grade:
PMG Abt. UNC 55
Unlisted in Schingoethe. In 1848, E.G. Folsom established Folsom's Business College, the predecessor of the Spencerian College, in Cleveland, Ohio. Only two students enrolled in the school's first academic term. Folsom's Business College helped provide Cleveland businesses with qualified employees. Among the college's graduates during the nineteenth century was John D. Rockefeller, Sr. The Cleveland College became known as the Spencerian College, named after Platt Spencer, a former professor at the institution and developer of Spencerian script. PMG comments Ink, which is barely seen on the back, which is almost laughable when one considers the scarcity of this piece. The only other example that was sold by one of the three major auction houses was a ratty-looking example sold by Heritage in 2003 for over $500. Tonight's offering should realize multiples of that figure. A great rarity.
