Baltimore, National Central Bank , 11207
Fr. 1801-1 $10 1929T1 Serial #1
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ     PMG
This bank was originally chartered in 1918 as a conversion of the German Bank of Baltimore City. This was not a time when national banks typically chose to keep their ethnic German titles following the end of World War I. To that end, the bank judiciously chose to wait until 1931 to issue during the small size era. Harry H. Hahn and W.E. Katenkamp were the officers who signed these notes. Only two other serial #1 notes have sold at auction for this charter. In our 2000 Philadelphia ANA sale, we sold a $5 in VF for $2,200. The other was a $10 note, graded PMG AU 58, that sold a year ago for $3,120 as part of the Marc Watts collection. This note, with its near Gem grade and accompanying EPQ designation, should catapult well beyond any reasonable expectations on its way to a record price. Of great interest to both advanced Maryland collectors as well as serial #1 collectors.
