Defective paper stock; while this won't photograph well, the left half of the note is printed on extremely thin, translucent paper because the sludge nearly ran out while it was being rolled. This part of the roll should have been removed by the BEP, after being supplied by Crane. Admittedly, not visually exciting, but carries a R-8 relative rarity in the standard reference book on US paper money errors.
