As pretty an Iowa ace as you can find. Pen signatures of James Carr Peasley & Elbridge Dexter Rand, so this was signed around 1871-72. There are eight aces like this. David Dortman told me once that he was at a show when a few appeared. It is clear why it belongs in this collection with it's beautiful blue Treasury number, Iowa first charter, serial #888 or the near perfect centering on the face or the minor edge crimps that made it affordable.

This bank in Linn County was chartered in 1881 near the end of the first charter period and it remained past the NBN era. This is the only $50 first charter and among the best for sure. This was printed by the BEP and it has excellent signatures of Charles Edward Putnam and John Taylor Hamilton, so it was actually signed in 1905-06. Only 108 sheets of $50/$100's were printed. Notes from Clarion were just not around when I was setting up at the Clarion coin show in the mid 1960's. In fact a won a Kennedy half dollar key chain as a door prize there, which I sold. This Wright County bank only issued $50 and $100 sheets which include 1,034 Brown Backs, 334 Red Seals, 240 Blue Seals and 1087 of the $50-100 sheets. These were mostly two note sheets so no wonder it's rare. Good pen signatures of M.A. Michaelson, Vice President and U.B. Tracy, Cashier enhance this example.

Estherville, First NB, M4700
Estherville was one of the most elusive banks in Iowa when I was young and no one had ever seen any, so Bill Higgins and John Hickman ran an ad to pay $500 just to see a physical note from this town in Emmett County. A farmer was plowing his field and called asking "would you pay $1,000 to see two?". They renewed their offer and got to see both and now there are six large notes reported in the Iowa book. Signatures of John P. Kirby and BA Gronstol. Formerly H&O #121.

This note and it's mate came from a group of serial numbers that were lost or stolen during shipment to the bank. A group of 450 sheets of $5 Original Series were stolen from the bank and "distressed" by the thieves so they would not stand out. At that time stolen or counterfeit notes were refused and returned to the bank, which sent them for redemption, leaving behind these for collectors.
