The Dean Oakes Collection > The Dean Oakes Collection - Session 1: Large Size Type Notes
Lot #1
-
Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes
-
($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 1a $5 1861 New York
Here is one of America's earliest banknotes, the New York Demand note with clear and hand-signed signatures of S.P. Hill - Treasurer of the United States and F.A. Reeve - Register of the Treasury and the "for the" is very clear. The census indicates 10 records including this note which is the earliest serial number listed. There are no sales or offerings since 2021 when a PCGS VF 25 realized $50,400. There have been three different examples offered in twelve years. This note has an excellent appearance and the normal circulation allows the quality to show through any comments. PMG notes minor restoration.

Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes
-
($ 10,000.00 - $ 20,000.00)
Fr. 3 $5 1861 Boston
A lovely Boston $5 demand note that has problem-free circulation with great color, centering and wonderful officers signatures. Unbelievably there are 123 reported which includes this note. Research records indicate an auction price of $26,400 for a 35 EPQ recently or an apparent 35 for $13,200 earlier this year. Small spot on portrait.
Grade:
VF/XF
Lot #3

Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes
-
($ 6,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fr. 4 $5 1861 Cincinnati
Cincinnati demand notes are as rare as any with only seven $5's recorded. This note is quite well used and graded Fine 12 with tape repairs noted. No doubt Dean enjoyed the rarity and cute serial number #11311. It reads in the census like there are 12 reported but only seven have real serials. Do you know why? These are truly rare.

Lot #4
-
Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes
-
($ 6,000.00 - $ 12,000.00)
Fr. 5 $5 1961 St. Louis
There are only 13 reported for this ultra scarce $5 St. Louis demand note and the last seven sold all show to have issues. This note has better quality than would be expected, but some pinholes are present. Likely from storage rather than pin related natural wear. It has been a minute since any were offered. Excellent officer signatures.

Fr. 7 $10 1861 Philadelphia
A great example of a $10 Demand Note and only three of the 50 reported are as fine. This is a lovely note with great color and paper quality with excellent pen signatures. Worse examples often have issues but not this one.

Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes

Fr. 8 $10 1861 Boston
There are only 43 $10 demand notes known. This example is an evenly circulated with a small brown spot that may also be a small paper pull. Holder shows Lot 8 W/10 on the sticker. Rarely more than two a year appear in all grades.

Lot #7

Large Size Type Notes > Demand Notes
-
($ 50,000.00 - $ 100,000.00)
Fr. 11 $20 1861 New York
This $20 Demand Note is often considered the rarest of type notes issued by the U.S. There are only eight example reported and the last offered in 2020. This note came from CAA in 6/94. This note looks pretty nice for the grade and the "restoration" that is noted is very difficult to decipher from any other wear without a black light.

This note is from the Davenport bank Hoard and disappeared in the mid-nineties. Dean had the chance to pick from the deal after I acquired it. This note is completely original to its acquisition date for it's new owner. The charter I thought these were saved from was Davenport NB which closed in 1901, but I have never been sure. I love fresh original unmolested notes but Dean always searched them out. He was always in favor of leaving notes original and his impressed that on me during and after the incredible demand around 1980. This is one of the most elusive of those in the Rainbow series as there are only 27 recorded. This shows a grade in T&P of "50" but based on everything within the submission I expect a 30/35 with some comments because I see five pinholes which should be noted for accuracy. Some time ago I saw several of the $100's severely impaired and almost beyond fixing but they now have been and can now poorly influence perception of the rarity of the rainbow type. A beautiful raw note accurately described and ready for your collection to be enjoyed. A PMG 45 (reconstruction) realized $192k in 4/25. It was graded 45 PPQ by PCGS in 2011 and realized $126,500.

($ 5,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Fr. 190 $10 June 10, 1864
These were legal tender circulating notes that bore interest every six months for three years paid semi-annually. I wonder how you got the interest? Unfortunately, as pretty as it must have been at issue, the gold embossed overprint was a big mistake because the ink and paper were not compatible and time has affected many of this type. This note is one of only 15 reported with this date and the quality seems similar to the others. The paper has excellent color and body, but there is a small rust spot and two tiny pieces of tape as well as a couple of tiny splits either on edge or internal. The last offered was in 2021 as a PMG VF 20 with splits repaired. I would suggest restoration could be best for the future of this rarity.

This interest bearing note may be one of the rarest of all types of US issues. These notes were printed by the BEP and they bore a 5% interest payable on redemption so any that remain were not redeemed, so the rarity makes perfect sense. This note has had a small corner restoration on the upper right and a small ink spot on the back along with the initials "WBB" and a date that I am a bit unsure of. Could be something from the interest payment. 31 are reported and this note has a very desirable look. In 2024 two were sold. No doubt this this "middle of the book" note will be well received.

Fr. 376 $50 1891
The Seward $50 1891 Treasury Note is a one of a type example as it is the only $50 Treasury note issued. The census indicates the first seven notes were saved and possibly the last note as well. While I am not sure which are in institutions, they are known and generally in high grade. Dean's note is about the next best and while it was graded UNC in the 70's, I remember it was less than UNC. A wonderful example that has been trimmed by someone more than half a century ago. As for the minor repairs, under black light it appears to be a spindle hole repair on the collar and some light corner work. From the Connecticut Historical Society and M. Vernon Sheldon Collections (Bowers & Merena 1983).

This is one of the rarities from the Davenport Bank hoard. This note does not appear in the census and records show 13 other examples with the finest being a PCGS VF35. The sale in 2023 was a PMG VF 25 with restoration that brought $168,000 and four years ago a Fine 12 Net brought $78,000. This note has never had a bath, it is "as found". There is a slightly rounded bottom left corner with some dirt on the back and a couple of tiny splits but great seal color. This is an amazing chance to get a previously unreported pedigreed rarity. There were once five of these sewed into a men's suit coat long ago and four needed corner restoration and one is the best known for the type. These have nearly always brought over 100k for the last 20 years.

No pedigree to follow but a pleasing high grade note with a minor edge split and tiny brown spot. Looks to be a VF 30 to me. Great color, centering and paper quality.

Wow! What a cool $500 St. Louis FRN with serial #H888A from district 8-H. A super saver many years ago and only 2 examples as high as XF and both with flaws. The flaws on this example both appear to be closed staple holes at right that are invisible without back lighting. Definitely the coolest St. Louis $500 and only 8 reported.

There is no question that the $1,000 FRN is one of the coolest and desirable types in large size as the complete series $5 - $1,000 are all available in very high quality. There are 64 examples reported which includes 12 that I acquired at the 1979 ANA in St. Louis from Gene Henry. Today those dozen represent many of the best known. This note has beautiful color, excellent centering and the look of a higher grade. PMG shows 38 graded with only three better. The consecutive note brought $42,000 in May 2025 from HA.

This is a rare type with the large brown seal from the department series of 1882. Just 35 reported and this is a nice mid-grade note with a close top margin. A PMG XF 45 realized $39,600 this year, while a lower end VF brought $7,800 a couple years ago. Dean always liked these brown seal early golds as they would not have been legal to own when he started, which likely fueled his interest.

This is an amazing triple signature rarity 1882 gold certificate with the engraved signatures of Thomas Acton and Bruce-Gilfillan Treasury signatures, small brown seal and brown serial numbers.
