Basso-168. Philippines. Japanese Occupation. Bronze Tirad Pass Medal, 1944 By C. Zamora. With Crimson Ribbon. Created by President Jose Paciano Laurel for his Philippine Constabulary, this is the only medal issued by the Government of the Philippines during the Japanese occupation. EXTREMELY RARE with fewer than 20 awarded, all but one posthumously. This example has thick original patina and is in AU condition with a die crack/planchet flaw on the reverse. This medal was struck to commemorate the opening of the Manila Mint on March 19, 1861. Obverse: Bust of Isabel II facing left, legend around, Reverse: Arms of Manila within wreath, legend around and dated below. The offered representative appears to have been worn in some form of jewelry and has a few marks consistent with the notation. Regardless, this is an important opportunity for the astute collector. Certainly an important opportunity for the astute collector. Freshly graded and housed in a NGC scratch resistant holder. ERRATA STATEMENT - According to a private collector, we have been informed that this item is not unique. He indicates that there are at least four examples of this coin known, and that the one being offered here is not from the Farouk Collection as he purchased that example from the Basso Collection in an envelope with Basso's handwriting to indicate provenance.
