Batesville Hillenbrand & Bro. General Store 10¢
Wolka UNL. Undated. Circa 1876-1888. This note, which is unlisted in the Wolka Indiana reference, marks the starting point of one of America's greatest success stories. John A Hillenbrand's German immigrant father was a woodworker who settled in Cincinnati before the Civil War. In 1861 the family moved to Batesville, but unfortunately John's father died shortly thereafter. John became the new head of the household and engaged in different entrepreneurial ventures. One such venture was starting a general store, from which this scrip hails. In 1906, the elder Hillenbrand purchased the Batesville Casket Company and transformed it into the largest producer of coffins in the world.

The Panic of 1907 – also known as the 1907 Bankers' Panic or Knickerbocker Crisis – was a financial crisis that took place in the United States over a three-week period starting in mid-October, when the New York Stock Exchange fell almost 50% from its peak the previous year. Panic occurred, as this was during a time of economic recession, and there were numerous runs on banks and trust companies.

Fr. 1804-1 $100 1929T1
Denver, First NB, 1016
From our 2015 PCDA sale, lot 1014, where it was described as: "This $100 is one of the finest specimens obtainable for this denomination on the First NB without spending considerably more for one of the uncirculated serial #1 notes that are known. That is assuming one were to appear at auction, an event that has yet to take place according to our records. As a matter of fact, no $100 this nice has be auctioned in the 20 years since we sold an AU in February 1995! Only seven Colorado banks issued $100s. Don't confuse this special note with the far more common $100 from the Colorado NB. From the Rocky Mountain Collection. ---- Denver was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory. The rush began in July 1858 and lasted until roughly the creation of the Colorado Territory on February 28, 1861. An estimated 100,000 gold seekers took part in one of the greatest gold rushes in North American history. Denver was a frontier town, with an economy based on servicing local miners with gambling, saloons, livestock and goods trading." It realized $940 at that time.

High grade notes from any of the Colorado national banks during the large note issues are very scarce and seldom offered. This note is new to the census but still there are only 50 large notes reported." It realized $920 at that time.

On the positive side, the note, having never really entered circulation, exhibits fresh paper and just four storage folds. From the Rocky Mountain Collection. ---- Denver was founded in November 1858 as a mining town during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush in western Kansas Territory. The rush began in July 1858 and lasted until roughly the creation of the Colorado Territory on February 28, 1861. From our Memphis 2008 sale, lot 4191, where it was described as: "This scarce bank has not been available since this solid example was added to this collection in 2000. The bank had a short history, serving the community from 1911 until 1915. Six notes are in the census. Bold signatures on this "Forbidden" title are a plus." Great stamped signatures. Fr. 622 $10 1902DB
Winter Haven, Snell NB, S10379
A truly great Florida bank. This bank issued a scant 2113 sheets of blue seal large size notes. 600 sheets were Date Backs like this note and there were 1513 sheets of Plain Backs. 77 small sheets were printed before the bank closed in 1930. Prior to the discovery of this note, only 1 note was listed in the census and it sold for nearly $40,000. I believe it's a real rarity; there is a possibility of a third note reported, but not confirmed. This note has excellent pen signatures and even margins, albeit a tiny roughness along the top edge.
Grade: Nearly VF    Bank Name: Winter Haven, Snell NB, S10379

Serious collectors of National Bank Notes do not usually get too hot and bothered about signature combinations, but it should be noted that this Woods-White note is dramatically scarcer than the Fr. 624 type. We sold this same note in our 2013 PCDA sale for $460. A neat occupational title.

West Baden, NB, 6388
A gorgeous new to the census entrant from the only bank to charter in this Orange County town. It appears someone put this note away as it has an eight fold and has retained the bright white paper appearing to have been printed recently. Written signatures of C.J. Dowden as Cashier who served in that capacity from 1925-1929, and Dr. M. Hassenmiller signs as VP, but he would eventually serve as President of the bank beginning in 1932.

Clinton, Merchants NB, M3736
This Clinton County bank is not scarce in absolute terms, but it quite magnificent and impressive in its merits as a Serial #1 Date Back. Boldly signed by C(alvin) D(exter) May and G(eorge) E(dwin) Wilson. The bank was chartered in 1887 and liquidated in 1931, being assumed by the City National Bank, charter #2469. An incredibly well embossed and wonderfully colored example that is as original as the day it was printed. There are price records of a #1 Red Seal as well as a couple of #1 1902 $10 Date Backs. All of these saw realizations in the thousands. A great note.

A pleasing example from this Story County institution that is just a hair from a near Gem grade. We sold this same note in 1986 and again in 1993, when it sold for $176. This note last appeared in our Memphis 1999 sale and it was signed by collector and ANA member Jackson Storm's grandfather, as I recall. This note is bright and fresh and we grade it XF 40 for appearance, although technically a grading service might say 35 EPQ or similar as there is both a horizontal and vertical fold. The "A" position $10 was graded AU and sold in 2012 at $6900 and a $20 realized $8625 in the same grade.

The neighborhood takes its name from a Revolutionary War fort constructed by General Nathaniel Greene, a close aide to George Washington, and is home to one of one of New York City's great parks, Fort Greene Park, the site of the Prison Ship Martyr's Monument and Crypt, honoring the more than 10,000 patriots who died aboard British prison ships during the Revolution. Ten years have passed since this bank has appeared at auction, as we sold a Red Seal in Oct 2010. This was the only bank to charter in this Fayette County town, doing so in January 1905, and would issue $747,900 of all three types of 1902 notes before going into receivership in March 1927. Pen signature of C. D. Kimball as Cashier and a stamped signature of T.B. Palmer as President, as both men served together from 1905 through 1916. Definitely the finest note known on the bank.

Mountville, NB, 3808 Uncut Sheets and Letter
Chartered in November 1887, the Mountville National Bank would issue Brown Backs, all three types of 1902 notes, as well as both Small Size types through the remainder of the National Bank Note era. Sometime in April 1930, the bank received the included letter from one George H. Blake "Collector of Paper Money" - we know today that he was actually serving as the agent for Colonel Green in trying to accumulate as many serial #1 small size sheets, and this letter spells it out how he accomplished that, by offering $37.50 for a $30 face value sheet. George Blake at one point owned and displayed the serial #1, plate A, 1862 $1 Legal Tender at the 1914 ANA Convention, once owned by Chase, and that note still resides at the Chase Manhattan Bank in New York. He also wrote one of the earliest references on Fractional Paper in 1908, and co-authored another book with Frank Limpert in 1950, "United States Paper Money: Old Series". Neither sheet is found in Track and Price or the National Bank Note Census, having resided in one of the bankers' families along with the letter for decades. And we have to thank that family for saving the letter, and the sheets - and by checking Kelly one will notice this is the last $5 Plain Back sheet, along with the first first Small Size Sheet for the bank!!! One can imagine the large sheet being taken off and placed back on a shelf after being counted numerous times for vault cash, while the small Serial Number One sheet only has corner folds affecting the bottom notes. An amazing trove!
