Lot #73628 - Continental Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
CC-72 $5 April 11, 1778 Contemporary Counterfeit
A scarce low denomination contemporary counterfeit from this tougher Yorktown issue. PMG notes: stained. This was by far the most heavily counterfeited Continental emission by the British, with most of the known examples of the two highest $30 and $40 denominations.
Grade: PMG VF 20
Lot #73629 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
DE-65 5s June 1, 1759
Although tape repaired all along the back and with a couple of edge notches, this is still a better Delaware Ben Franklin note. Any Colonial printed by Benjamin Franklin has been selling really well in recent months.
Grade: VG
Lot #73630 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
DE-66 10s June 1, 1759
Another Ben Franklin note that has been tape repaired. Generally speaking a more than acceptable example of this very popular type.
Grade: Fine
Lot #73631 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
MD-67 $2 April 10, 1774
One of the prettiest 1774 Maryland notes that you are likely to find at any grade level. It is seen with huge margins, bold signatures, exceptional printing quality, and an essentially full left indent.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55 PPQ
Lot #73632 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
MD-68 $4 April 10, 1774
An exceptional example with superb eye appeal and light handling.
Grade: Ch. Abt. UNC
Lot #73633 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
NY-184 8s January 6, 1776 Water Works
This impressive red and black printed note is vivid and extremely well centered. A very lovely crisp note showing a new steam powered water pump vignette on its reverse.
Grade: Ch. UNC
Lot #73634 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
NY-197 8s March 5, 1776 Water Works
An impressive red and black printed note which has vivid printing and signatures, as well as a trio of jumbo margins. A very lovely crisp note showing a new steam powered water pump vignette on its reverse.
Grade: Ch. UNC
Lot #73635 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
NC-124 20s April 23, 1761
Bright paper, four well accomplished signatures, and full border ornamentation are seen on this lovely North Carolina colonial. PMG notes a small hole that is of little visual consequence.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53
Lot #73636 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
RI-269 $1/8 May 22, 1777
A much scarcer fractional denomination note from this series. PCGS notes: damage and repairs, design redrawn. If one checks the population reports it becomes clear that virtually all of these $1/8 notes have condition issues. The Newman note was a paltry Apparent Fine 15 and had listed a multitude of problems.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 35
Lot #73637 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
SC-100 20L June 1, 1775
Seen with stains, tape repairs, edge and internal splits, etc. With all that said, this is still a well printed example from this South Carolina issue.
Grade: Fine
Lot #73638 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1226 3c Third Issue
A pretty little Fractional type note that is the lowest denomination issued. This very well centered note appears to have earned its third-party grade.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #73639 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1228 5c First Issue Vertical Uncut Pair
A really scarce uncut perforated Fractional pair. Bright and wonderfully margined with deep perforations and complete strip at both top and bottom. These typically sell for many hundreds of dollars the few times they are seen. A type missing from Friedberg, O'Mara, and Newman. This ex: Ford pair sold for roughly $725 a dozen years ago.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53 PPQ
Lot #73640 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1232SP 5c Second Issue Wide Margin Pair
A bright and very attractive wide margin specimen pair. PMG has commented 'trimmed' on both notes. It has been our experience that any Fractional specimen that is not at its fully wide "as issued" state of preservation is considered trimmed. This reasoning is nothing short of preposterous.
Grade: PMG UNC 62 & 63
Lot #73641 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1251 10c Third Issue Wide Margin Face
A stellar example of this Third Issue wide margin face specimen. It is bright, deeply printed, and with perfect centering. A frame line is seen at left.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #73642 - Fractional Currency - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)
Fr. 1259 10c Fourth Issue
A perfectly centered example for the grade. Seen with bolder blue right end fibers and a somewhat browner seal.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #73643 - Fractional Currency - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,600.00)
Fr. 1279 25c First Issue
Full perforation strip on the bottom margin. Jumbo right margin. Deep perforations on all sides and with the superior color one would expect from a Gem note. Already in the past year we saw a 66 PQ piece sell for over $1,250. Perforated examples at this grade level are always in great demand from both collector and dealer alike.
Grade: LCG Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #73644 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1324 50c Third Issue
A robust Gem Spinner red back that has cavernous embossing and flawless paper. A perfect representative for a Fractional type set.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #73645 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1348 50c Third Issue
A much scarcer Justice red back with "1" and "a" on face position indicators. PMG has net graded due to left end reattached. Any Fr. 1348 that is in one piece is worth at least a few hundred dollars. This is one of the 10 scarcest Fractional numbers.
Grade: PMG Ch. Fine 15 Net
Lot #73646 - Error Notes > National Bank Notes > Oregon - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1800-2 $5 1929T2
Portland, United States NB, 4514
Gutter fold error is found on this Type 2 note; errors on small size nationals are few and far between, especially less so on Type 2 notes.
Grade: PMG VF 25    Bank Name: Portland, United States NB, 4514
Lot #73647 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 300.00 - $ 600.00)

A gutter of epic proportions with a full length horizontal fold.
Grade: Ch. CU
Lot #73648 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 30,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 1935-B $2 1976 New York B-A Mismatch Serial Number
A wonderful Gem mismatch serial numbers Deuces that ends in #201/102A. Here is a second opportunity that rarely appears with rare error notes, but here it is, a second pack of $2 mismatched serial number notes. This pack is consecutive to the pack we offered last year which realized $27,600 all in. Band marks are visible on the edge. Records are that there are four packs of these mismatches and that about 60 from the pack, beginning with #601-700 are mismatches but #601 is not. There is no new information to dispute these findings. This is an amazing promotional opportunity with over 20% of the issue.
Grade: Ch. To Gem CU
Lot #73649 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 25,000.00 - $ 50,000.00)
Fr. 1935-H $2 1976 St. Louis H-A Pack Mismatched District Block
I have known that these were found by the pack when this error occurred but I have never seen one until this pack. This is a pack of 100 consecutive New York FRN $2s with a mismatched district block H454/B454. The band around the notes tells us this pack was released around 1992. Demand is excellent for mismatch error notes and this is a spectacular item.
Grade: Ch. To Gem CU
Lot #73650 - Error Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 2011-A $10 1950-A Boston
This is a 1950-A Boston $10 that is missing the third printing, why it was released after being identified completely is both cool and odd. I don't recall any others missing the third printing on the old seal variety.
Grade: Ch. AU
Lot #73651 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
Fr. 1500 $1 1928 #A00000016A
A great low number $1 1928 Fr. 1500 from the second sheet. Last year we sold #13 at $7,737 in '55'. This is a much higher quality but from the second sheet. We also sold #34 at $1,645. The estimate should cover the range.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ
Lot #73652 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 2,750.00)
Fr. 1500 $1 1928 #A00000057A
This is truly a high-end Gem from the fifth sheet of Red Seal $1s printed. We sold #13 in AU at $7,637 and #34 in '66' at $1,645 last year. Demand remains high for special number notes.

Lot #73688 - Small Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 3,500.00 - $ 6,500.00)
Fr. 1706 $10 1953 A-A 18 Subject Uncut Sheet
This was the only issue of 18 subject sheets of Silver Certificates; with 100 set aside for sale. This sheet begins with serial #A00000054A and ends with #A00136054A. The sheet certainly appears issue free but PMG calls it a Ch. UNC 64, not Gem or EPQ. I don't understand that as I think it's plenty perfect enough. The 10th Edition of Small Size Notes catalog lists known sheets at 12 but that reference is several years old and this and others have since appeared. Now 17 sheets have been identified. Records indicate a possibly better sheet that realized $7,050 in April 2016 and a lower quality '63' at $2,880 in January 2020.

Fr. 124 $20 1862
Series 8. This is the earliest type of $20 Legal Tender and the census shows 105 serial numbers recorded. This note should grade VF 25, and there are only 14 notes that are at least called that. A wonderful circ note with super body and color. There is an contemporary number in ink in the back design. This note has the first obligation on back, along with even circulation and excellent paper. This note arrived for the sale as I'm finishing it up so it will be sold in a PMG holder and that grade will appear on our website once it's returned. Lot #73785 - Large Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 8,500.00 - $ 17,000.00)
Fr. 126 $20 1862
A rare variety of the early 1862-1863 $20 Legal Tenders. The note has great color and paper quality along with a comment of minor restoration, which I have yet to identify. Definitely a desirable note with rarity and just 15 serial numbers recorded. This is the highest grade reported for this type. It has twice sold; in VF 20 for $12,650 by us in 2014 and another Apparent 30 back in 2008 that was so arbitrarily graded it changed Track & Price. So back to 2014 for a good comparison. PMG notes: minor restoration.

A wonderful Rainbow $20 with excellent centering and color that few have a chance to see. There are 207 serial numbers recorded but only 15 to 25 in VF and XF. Off to slab-land for this note. This note arrived for the sale as I'm finishing it up so it will be sold in a PMG holder and that grade will appear on our website once it's returned. This note originally came from Stanley Morycz years ago as Gem. The centering and originality are beautiful so why the AU 55 grade now? It makes me question it. It looks like an absolutely problem free Gem in a '55' holder.

This note appears to be new to the census and potentially the finest of all 80 examples now recorded. There are several from the run which includes #990, other #989-994 are reported in UNC grades but nothing better than this lovely example graded 65 PPQ by PCGS Banknote Grading Co, part of Collectors Universe. We sold a 64 PPQ PCGS at $4,230 and a year earlier a '64' realized $7,637. How high today's note will go remains to be determined. It's been five years since any close have been offered.

Fr. 259 $5 1886 #B10
This is the earliest printed $5 Silver Dollar Back known to have survived in collector's hands. The note is serial #B10, and on top of that there are only 47 serial numbers recorded. Only two notes, the serial #B24 and #B87162, have been called UNC or Gem, other than a problem note with issues. So we have the lowest serial number known for the type and the third finest known example that was part of an old collection for decades before the sale in 2017 at $11,750. This is a Silver Dollar Back with everything going for it - Serial #B10 - Third Finest Known - Extremely Important Type.

Wow…what a wonderful $5 Educational with amazing color, centering and beauty. These notes were 'Banned In Boston' due to the bare breast which seems like total foolishness to me but these banker's wives had power. This is an amazing AU that I wish I could carefully grade myself. I still think the note is AU, but not average quality. Take a look for yourself. Just amazing for the type.

Lot #73804 - Large Size Type Notes > Silver Certificates - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 6,500.00)
Fr. 335 $50 1891
The $50 Silver Certificates are few and far between. This is a pleasing VF 30 with some very hard to find flaws; probably visible with a black light. The bid on VF 20 is $3,250 and on XF it's $7,000. This note should fall in the middle somewhere. In January a VF 25 realized $3,840 and records show 201 serial numbers recorded, with high grades very uncommon and UNCs are nearly impossible to acquire. Blue seal and the Parker-Burke Treasury signatures. PMG notes: restoration.

Lot #73810 - Large Size Type Notes > Federal Reserve Notes - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 10,000.00)
Fr. 953b $20 1914RS New York
Here is a gorgeous Red Seal New York FRN that is part of a small run of serial numbers that represent most all of the finest examples of this type. The note has amazing color and centering. The only reason I can imagine for the '64' grade is the uneven back centering; a likely issue with other graded notes in this group. There are no '64' prices recorded recently; just a PCGS 66 that sold 4/24 at $10,800.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64

There are currently only 22 Red Seals recorded with this addition which is a lovely, problem free note for the grade. Probably six of the recorded notes are a bit higher grade but no more appealing. The last appearance for this note was in 2013. The PMG hold incorrectly lists this as a Fr. 952b Boston.

Fr. 628/654 $10-10-10-20 1902ND Uncut Sheet
Chicago, Lawndale NB, 10247 Uncut Sheet
Here is a Gem UNC 65 EPQ uncut sheet of $10-10-10-20 from this Chicago bank dated April 16, 1912. The census indicates there are 12 other sheets known, and those seem to be eight $5 sheets and four $10-10-10-20 sheets of Plain Backs, along with one 1902 Date Back. The key here is quality. This appears to be the only Gem sheet of $10-10-10-20; an amazing reality with sheet #7373. In 2015 a lower graded sheet realized $5,640. Today I assume $5,000 would be a great place to start the bidding. Nearly perfect penned signatures of Frank and Rudolph Hajicek. I can find no real sales of notes from this bank offered as Gem singles.

This bank was chartered in 1871 and many of the 46 large notes recorded came from the early printing. I am not sure if no one liked them or they did and wanted to save them. There are eight $5 Brown Backs and only the Higgins Museum can boast a finer example. This note is pen signed by C.D. Ellis, President, from 1906 to 1929 and R.V. McCarmond, Assistant Cashier, from 1907 to 1919. The engraved date is January 31, 1891. A high quality Iowa $5 Brown Back.

Burlington, NB, 1979
This is a very tough type from Kansas but it's likely the lowest grade among the eight large notes reported. The National Bank Note Census shows only nine Original Series $5s. Signers were H.L. Jarboe, President and N.P. Garretson, Cashier. The Bank of Jarboe, Garretson & Co., which began business at Burlington on April 14, 1870, was the first banking establishment in Coffey County. The bank was reorganized as the Burlington National Bank on April 29, 1872. This bank issued First Charters and Brown Backs only. The outstanding in 1910 was $12,474.

There are currently six large notes reported and all are $50s. The cashier's signature looks like Whitaker and no president's signature is visible. The first bank in Concordia was established in 1878 and this charter was organized in October 1883. This bank chose not to issue small size notes. The bank issued principally high denomination notes. The large out in 1935 was $7,290. From the C. Dale Lyon Collection.

The notes that are very high quality on this charter came through Dr. Howard Carter who was a rural banker in Missouri and he had these when I met him in 1970. Three different banks from Kansas including Kaw Valley of Topeka. The quality of this note was carefully considered, clearly, years ago with its purchase. This is as high a grade as any recorded during the third-party grading era that I can find.

A lovely note from northern Kansas near the Nebraska border. Nice quality and with exceptional pen signatures of the president and cashier. A desirable note from Doniphan County. PMG notes: annotation.

Cape Cod banks are always in demand, especially when so named in the bank's title. A large only bank that liquidated in 1920 with this being one of a small handful of Aces. Although PMG notes there are repairs and splits, this is an unusually bright and well-margined example for this type. Two years ago there was a somewhat lowly PMG VG 10 that sold for about $1,200 and that piece was nowhere near the caliber of the current offering.

Just a darn rare charter in both large size and small size. A meager five pieces listed in small size with none grading better than VF. Auction appearances are infrequent at best, and when notes do appear they invariably broach the four-figure threshold.

This bank was chartered rather late in the Third Charter period. This note is the bottom note from the first sheet of $5s. Excellent penned signatures as well as bottom sheet selvage which has a split and the paper is slightly yellowed. PMG notes: toned, not unaffected by issues in selvage.

Saint Paul, NB, 3129 Uncut Sheet
As I was becoming a budding Numismatist in the 1960s I would religiously read the ads of Beebe's of Omaha and follow their offerings. In those days the $5 Brown Back uncut sheets from Saint Paul were a regular offering and now records indicate there are just 17 uncut sheets and 34 singles known. All are $5 Brown Backs in higher quality, about 100 notes, both sheets and singles from an issue of 2,628 sheets between 1884 and 1897. I never really thought of how cool it would have been to own a sheet like this back then; today I understand how truly rare uncut sheets of $5 Brown Backs are. This sheet, #2623, is graded Gem 65 EPQ, better than all but three others graded '65'. Most recent prices show a single note graded '68' at $10,200 and '64' sheets in 2018 at $11,400, the '58' sheets in 2012 at $25,300 and in 2007 at $25,300. I would assume superb examples exist including this sheet. The question is, do you want to cut it or have one of absolutely the highest quality Brown Back sheet. The sheets shown in the census, this one was added, are: #2604, #2606, #2614, #2615, #2619, #2621, #2622, #2623, #2627, #2628.

Before the bidders let out a collective groan that there is yet another Reno note in a public sale, let's be clear. There are, in round figures, a seemingly infinite number of $5 notes on the bank but far fewer $10 notes. This bright and well-centered piece first sold for a little under $2,000 in a 2014 sale. It likely will not get there this evening but it should handily surpass the $1,000 barrier.

This $50 Nevada is new to the Track & Price census and it's the seventeenth $50 known on this charter; most any other $50s known are on Winnemucca. There are just over 100 large notes reported on this Washoe County bank and Reno was the big early Nevada city. I assume the high denominations were needed for the miners or assayers in the area but it seems that gambling was also an early need for cash. This was the first note that Zollie Kelman paid a premium for at $65, $15 over face value, around 1952 at the Jewelry Exchange, likely in the Twin Cities. Somewhat rounded corners but excellent black signatures. There is some edge wear as well.

This has always been one of the greatest names and I'm sure the demand and price will reflect that. The note has excellent signatures that are perfectly clear. This note was the last one of its quality offered and that was in 2001; two low grade Blue Seals and a Fine $20 Value Back which brought $8,596 in 2007. A great note that is returning home to us after being gone for a dozen years. Sandy Hill was the original name of this upstate New York community that changed its name to Hudson Falls in 1910. There are only a half dozen 1929 Series notes listed in the census, with this easily being the finest of that small group. Seen with bright paper, bold printing, and a modicum of light folds. We first sold this same note for over $2,000.

Lake George, First NB, 8793
Lake George is a lovely vacation spot in New York state. The census figures are a bit misleading because so few of these actually appear at auction; they are tightly held by collectors. A piece well deserving of the assigned EPQ designation and sure to please its new owner.

Manhasset, First NB, 11924
A dozen large size notes are enumerated in the National Bank Note Census, all of which are $5 Plain Backs. This Nassau County institution opened in 1921 and which ceased operations in 1935 when the national banking era came to a close. A paltry $355 in large notes remained outstanding at that time. Bold stamped signatures, plentiful margins, and bright paper surfaces validate PMG's Exceptional Paper Quality designation. In the past decade, we have seen lightly circulated examples sell for as much as $4,000. After doing some research we have concluded that this is the finest large size example known and it should make our estimate look conservative by the time the hammer falls. The new owner of this note and the Great Neck Station note can lay claim to bragging rights out on the Island.

Here is a new addition to the census which only now is up to 12 large notes recorded. Being graded PMG 25 makes this note near the top of known notes. The body of the note is good but the signatures are gone. The only offerings were eight and ten years ago when a Fine 15 realized $2,232 and $2,750 in strong demand at that time.

There are only a few opportunities each year to acquire a truly great, previously undiscovered rarity and here is a note we were able to acquire, save and offer at this time, after removing old cellophane tape and its affects on the piece of paper. The note has had professional attention to its issues and has been encapsulated by PMG as Fine 15 (restoration). I might argue that I have seen worse notes with better numerical graded holders but that is of little regard. Within the state of South Carolina this was the highest denomination printed, there were no $500 or $1,000 First Charters. In fact, only five South Carolina banks ever issued $100 notes. Those notes were are follows: Charter #1622, Charleston, $100 First Charter 1875, (1,325); Charter #1680, Columbia, $100 Original (608), 1875 (1,000) and Brown Backs (2,638); charter #1765, Columbia, $100 Brown Backs (950); Charter 2044, Charleston, $100 Original First Charters (608); Charter #5004, Greenville, $100 Brown Backs (1,186(, $100 Date Backs (178). From all the data we know, only three $100 South Carolina note have survived and none were issued after 1882 $10 Date Backs. No Third Charters or small size. Most of the state's national banks were chartered during the 1902 Series and small size. I believe I was told that no South Carolina national banks still exist (per Austin Sheheen). So this is the first opportunity in a very long time to have, or dream about a South Carolina $100. This is only the third Brown Back listed for this charter, but I believe the other $100 Brown Back is also on this charter. PMG notes: restoration.
