Lot #1000 - Continental Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CC-5 $5 May 10, 1775
A pleasing note with excellent paper quality and very popular now.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53 PPQ
Lot #1001 - Continental Currency - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
CC-20 $1/3 February 17, 1776
The red ink serial number as well as Taylor signature remain bold on this lightly circulated note. Due to its connection with the Fugio cent and the design elements suggested by Benjamin Franklin, this has always been one of the most popular notes in the entire realm of Continental/Colonial Currency collecting. A perennial four-figure item at this grade level and certain to make a triumphant entry into the next collection that claims it.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53
Lot #1002 - Continental Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
CC-54 $30 November 2, 1776 Benjamin Levy Autograph
The $30 note is the only Continental denomination that has the dual circular vignettes instead of the nature print. Signed by Benjamin Levy, the only Jewish signer of Continental Currency. On the cusp of the full XF grade and with the Levy signature providing plenty of extra value.
Grade: PMG Ch. VF 35
Lot #1003 - Continental Currency - ($ 3,000.00 - $ 6,000.00)
CC-66 $5 May 20, 1777.
A scarce date on this top quality example. PMG notes: previously mounted.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1004 - Continental Currency - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,200.00)
CC-87 $1 January 14, 1779
A sharp XF with excellent margins and quality along with the black and red printing.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 PPQ
Lot #1005 - Continental Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CC-94 $25 January 14, 1779
What a great odd denomination note with excellent color.
Grade: AU

Lot #1007 - Continental Currency - ($ 1,700.00 - $ 3,500.00)
CC-97 $50 January 14, 1779
A high end circ with excellent margins and colors. Imagine the story this note could tell about where it's been. PMG notes: paper pull.
Grade: PMG Ch. XF 45
Lot #1008 - Continental Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CC-101 $70 January 14, 1779
A good looking note with a small edge tear at the right, noted by PCGS. Very high grade red and black note that is very desirable.
Grade: PCGS XF 40 Apparent
Lot #1009 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
CT-159 2 Shillings 6 Pence May 10, 1770
Uncancelled and very scarce as such. This is the earliest of the attainable Connecticut issues. The lowest denomination and in a very acceptable grade for this series. PCGS notes small edge splits and minor mounting remnants. A scarce note that is rarely seen without a cancel.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1010 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
DE-77 5 Shillings January 1, 1776
Cavernous embossing and exceptional centering validate the assigned third-party grade. In our PCDA sale in the Fall, we sold a 6 Shilling note, in a lesser PCGS 64 PPQ holder, for $646.25; this example should do much better.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1011 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
DE-80 20 Shillings January 1, 1776
A fresh and attractive UNC with three signatures and excellent body. One of 98 notes listed.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #1012 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
GA-131 20 Shillings October 16, 1786
This issue was authorized after 50,000 Pounds to be loaned on real estate mortgage. Signed by Geo. Jones, Treasurer along with T.H. Napier and J.H.P. Carnes. While there are a few very minor flaws and a couple of light stains - it's a rare issue. PCGS notes: repairs, stains.
Grade: PCGS VF 25 Apparent
Lot #1013 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
MD-63 $1/3 April 10, 1774
Rare as an uncirculated note. A better fractional denomination that is not to be confused with the $1/2 note or some of the whole denominations that do appear in high grade. PCGS notes a stain on the back but it is confined to one side and is not seen from the face. A nearly solid five-digit serial #22228 is of additional interest. This is the only CU $1/3 note at either service as it really is that tough to obtain at this grade level.
Grade: PCGS Apparent New 62
Lot #1014 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
MA-158 1 Shilling August 18, 1775
The first Sword in Hand issue and the lowest denomination. Notes of this type have always been extraordinarily popular with collectors due to the American Revolutionary figure holding a sword in one hand and a copy of the Magna Carta in the other, as well as the fact that these were engraved and printed by the famous Colonial patriot Paul Revere. This is the only one of the 16 denominations that has a pine tree vignette instead of a small ship. PMG has cited tape repairs and halves sewn together at center, with the tape being on the back. Not a note available in higher grades, with the 5th edition Newman listing this note at $10,000 in Fine, nearly triple the price of all the other 15 denominations. Always a four-figure note as this one will no doubt be.
Grade: PMG Fine 12 Net
Lot #1015 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
MA-159 2 Shillings August 18, 1775
The historical vignette of a Minuteman carrying a sword in hand makes this one of the most desirable of Colonial currency issues. PMG does point out that the note is backed and has a tape repair. Very few of these notes survive without any problems, ranging from minor to major and even falling apart. In our PCDA sale we sold an example of this same issue for $763.75 in a PMG VG 8 Net holder, and that note was much uglier than this one.
Grade: PMG VG 8 Net
Lot #1016 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
MA-187 36 Shillings December 7, 1775 Contemporary Counterfeit
Although a contemporary counterfeit, if you are looking for a singular high-grade example of this Minuteman note then look no further. PCGS notes some minor mounting remnants on the back and they are minor indeed. Subtle differences indicate that this is a counterfeit, most notably the masts are upright instead of leaning to the right. Really about the nicest example we have seen.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1017 - Colonial Currency > New Hampshire - ($ 7,500.00 - $ 15,000.00)
NH-155 $3 January 26, 1776
An utterly rare note in the absolute sense but even more astoundingly rare in this state of preservation and without any problems. This is the first Daniel Fowle issue and not to be confused with the scarce, yet somewhat more available, June 28, 1776, issue. Both grading services have combined to grade a whopping seven notes for this entire issue across all denominations. This is easily the Top Pop $3 note at both services combined. Only a $5 note graded PMG AU 58 is better for any denomination from this series. The only other examples we have seen from this series any time recently were a couple of Apparent graded VF/XF notes which realized an average of around $4,000 each. There was also a $2 note, graded PMG VF 25, which brought over $5,500. This note is far superior to any of the aforementioned examples and in all likelihood will hammer down for a five-figure price, leaving its new owner with bragging rights for this trophy Colonial.
Grade: PMG XF 40
Lot #1018 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
NJ-153 18 Pence December 31, 1763
A bright and wonderfully signed example of this New Jersey series. The margins are well above average for this type. Typical Ch. CU notes sell for $300 or more and Gems hit the $1,000 mark when available.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1019 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 500.00 - $ 750.00)
NJ-153 18 Pence December 31, 1763
A lovely UNC of this 1763 issue. Not what is normally seen.
Grade: Ch. CU
Lot #1020 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
NJ-182 3 Pounds March 25, 1776
The face is printed in red and blue. Very attractive and problem free with three signatures.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50
Lot #1021 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
NJ-183 6 Pounds March 25, 1776
A rare and desirable 6 Pound note from March 25, 1776 and with the lovely red and blue printing along with excellent borders.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1022 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
NJ-202 2 Shillings 6 Pence December 20, 1783
Another lovely Colonial rarity that is Top Pop at PMG for the entire series since it is the only 1783 New Jersey note they have had the pleasure to grade. There are some minor tape repairs and reconstruction that has caused the net grade. Well signed by Ewing and Mott with good detail throughout. This note hails from the early Confederation period and they were withdrawn from circulation within a year. A year ago, the Newman note of this same denomination, graded PCGS Apparent Fine 15, sold for $3,290. We would expect much the same here tonight.
Grade: PMG Ch. Fine 15 Net
Lot #1023 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
NY-194 $5 August 13, 1776
A scarce issue with a candelabra UNO EDIMQUE. Evenly circulated and scarce in the quality.
Grade: XF
Lot #1024 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
NY-257 2 Pence January 11, 1791 Constitutional Society
A rare type that is listed on page 300 of the Newman Fifth Edition. PCGS notes small repairs and paperclip rust stain, neither of which are of particular detriment. Enormously margined and quite attractive. Per Newman "Small change notes issued in Dutchess County with printed signature of Edmund Per Lee, Treasurer. Printed by Nicholas Power at Poughkeepsie. Hand numbered. Blank backs." One of only three we have seen and far superior to the Newman plate note. The only other was a PMG VF 35 with splits that sold for $862.50 back in an anemic 2009 market.
Grade: PCGS Apparent XF 40
Lot #1025 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
NY-275 1 Pence Undated Presbyterian Congregation of Ballstown
A very interesting cross-genre note that could be considered with either the Colonials or Obsoletes. Listed in Newman on Page 307 of the Fifth Edition. Aside from the Newman plate note this is the only other example we have seen. PCGS notes there are small repairs. As per Newman "Church Money of the Trustees of the Presbyterian Congregation of Ballstown, Albany County, signed by H. Baldwin. Printed by Barber and Southwick of Albany". A note missing even from the voluminous Gordon Harris collection from a dozen years ago.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 30
Lot #1026 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
NC-124 20 Shillings April 23, 1761
This earlier Colonial note has everything you could want. It has paper as bright as if it were printed last night, boldly-accomplished signatures and enormous margins. Almost fully ornamented, a quality of which few North Carolina Colonials can boast. Top Pop at PMG since it is the only pre-1771 note they have graded at this grade level for this available southern colony. They note minor repairs which for the life of us we cannot find and have serious misgivings about their existence. A wonderful Colonial destined for an advanced collection.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 Net

Lot #1028 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Lot #1030 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
PA-157 2 Shillings 6 Pence April 3, 1772 John Morton Autograph
Signed by John Morton, signer of the Declaration of Independence. PCGS notes minor damage and small hole, neither of which affect his signature. We have seen low end VFs approach the $1,000 mark recently.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20
Lot #1031 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Grade: PCGS VF 20 Apparent
Lot #1036 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 750.00)

Lot #1037 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,000.00)

Lot #1038 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Nice even margins on this Coram note. In Latin it reads, "Mutua Defensio Tutissina" (Mutual defense is safest). The face also shows a lyre and horn, with flags on the back. There were 15,000 notes issued. The note has had some restoration with an upper corner replaced and the design redrawn, also noted by PCGS.

Lot #1039 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)

Lot #1040 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Alabama - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Clairborne Robertson & Agee 50c
A clean, broadly margined and problem-free example of this crushingly rare Civil War era piece on Claiborne. Unlisted in Rosene and even missing from Walter's massive collection of years ago. Presumably unique as we can find no other hint of a record aside from this note. Certain to land well into four-figure territory for this irreplaceable note.
Grade: PCGS VF 25
Lot #1041 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Alabama - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Guntersville J.C. Hays - May & Lamar 25c
While not as rare as the Claiborne note, this is still a darn scarce example of a very desirable piece that bears a Civil War date and which has incredible eye appeal. Dr. Jones sold this note 15 years ago and it also happens to be plated in the Rosene book. Another seemingly irreplaceable Alabama Obsolete for the discriminating collector.

Haxby 65-G42. Six POCs along the signature lines. PCGS notes some hinge repaired edge tears. A really pretty black and white proof with central shipping vignette flanked by other varied vignettes. Delaware as a general rule has fewer Proofs than plenty of other states and this is the only example we have seen on Smyrna.

Lot #1055 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Maryland - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Baltimore & Frederick Turnpike Road 2c
KSG 5.9.2. An incredibly rare piece of early scrip and in a condition that we just never see. Only two denominations are known in the Shank reference. Plentiful margins, boldly-accomplished signature and utterly problem-free paper add tremendously to both the eye appeal and value of this piece. It is really uncommon to see many pre-1820 notes with this degree of embossing and solid paper surface quality. The only other piece we have seen at auction in the past two decades was a F/VF piece with rough edges which sold multiple times at an average of about $1,000 each. The present offering should perform far better.

Clearing House Loan Certificates are a type of panic scrip, usually of high denominations. This is believed to be a sample of how these were supposed to operate. Unique in Hewitt's census and the only example we have seen. PMG notes there are mounting remnants and tears. Minor issues such as this tend to be overlooked when the word "unique" is used to indicate rarity.

Lot #1141 - Confederate Notes - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
T-66 $50 February 17, 1864
A gorgeous Gem example of this common type that is not so often seen at this grade level.

Lot #1142 - Confederate Items - ($ 500.00 - $ 800.00)
Group of Confederate Notes
This nine piece lot includes: T-65 AU; T-66 2 pcs VF & CU; T-67 AU; T-68 CU; T-69 CU; T-70 Ch. CU; T-71 Cr 577 AU; T-72 Cr 578 CU.
Lot #1143 - Fractional Currency - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 7,500.00)
Fractional Shield
A lovely shield with a grey background and nice, well preserved notes with very minor staining on the board. A desirable thin oak frame in old finish and original gold gilt liner. It appears to have been together for a long time.
Lot #1144 - Fractional Currency - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 7,500.00)
Fractional Shield
I was told this came from an old Pennsylvania Post Office building that was being torn down. I'm not sure of the story but the shield has a grey background with a crease that is commonly found, as well as a stain or burn from acidity behind it. This shield is housed in a curly maple frame with a gold gilt liner. Some fading but similar to many.
Lot #1145 - Fractional Currency - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 7,500.00)
Fractional Shield
This shield has the grey background with has good color and a rare uniformity. There are no folds and the board it's printed on is trimmed just past the tips. Framed (1980s) and matted.
Lot #1146 - Fractional Currency - ($ 4,500.00 - $ 7,500.00)
Fractional Shield
This shield has a grey background and it has been matted around the shield itself, possibly to cover up damage. The colors seem pretty good and the body of the shield is excellent, except for a stain near the star, not near the notes. Frame is circa 1980s. Sells AS IS - NO RETURN.
Lot #1147 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,250.00 - $ 3,750.00)
Fr. 1231 5c First Issue
Rare is a term that auction catalogers often bandy about but in the case of this fractional invert it is most apropos. This first issue straight edge, no monogram note with inverted back was considered unique when Milt published the Encyclopedia in 1978 and it is still so today. This note was in the Friedberg as well as the O'Mara collections. It realized $1,610 in the O'Mara sale and we strongly suspect that it will do better this evening.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 50 PPQ
Lot #1148 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
Fr. 1232 5c Second Issue
An incredibly tough fractional invert as there are only three known of this type. In the late 1970's, this was listed as a unique error with only two more surfacing in the intervening decades. This note was part of both Friedberg and O'Mara's collections. Before this year it sold a decade ago for over $1300 and in the 2015 FUN sale another, graded PCGS AU 55 PPQ, realized over $1500.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1149 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)

Lot #1150 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)

Lot #1151 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1249 10c Second Issue Experimental Back

Lot #1153 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
Fr. 1272SP 15c Third Issue Wide Margin Pair
A fully wide Grant-Sherman specimen pair with the face showing the facsimile signatures and the back displaying robust green inks. Bright paper and excellent centering vault this pair close to the Gem grade. The Green Sheet valuation for this pair is $1,400 in this grade, although that seems a bit light for this quality.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1154 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
Fr. 1274SP 15c Third Issue Wide Margin Pair
Bright, perfectly centered and with boldly contrasted inks upon snowy white background. The hand-signed face specimen with both Colby and Spinner autographs is a screaming Gem, without the ink erosion that so often accompanies Spinner's autograph. The more desirable red back would easily grade superb if the left to right centering were a little more even. Green Sheet asking price on this gem pair is roughly $2,300, a figure that would not surprise us at all once the hammer falls.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 & 66 PPQ
Lot #1155 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)

Lot #1159 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 1298 25c Third Issue
An absolutely rare invert of this fiber paper Fessenden type with the "a" on face position indicator. A note that would easily grade Choice CU or better but for margin tightness, and with the Premium Paper Quality designation well deserved. This is the plate note from Friedberg's Fractional Encyclopedia and it is photographed on page 100. The only other example known is a dark and muddy looking Very Fine. In 1997 this note originally sold for $825. It is in a class by itself and it will take a solid four-figure price to obtain it this evening.
Grade: PCGS New 62 PPQ
Lot #1160 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,200.00 - $ 1,800.00)

A much tougher Spinner sub-type that has green back with "A-2-6-5" surcharges as well. Deeply embossed and utterly fresh with three large margins to its credit. These tend to sell for at least several hundred dollars as you get closer to the gem grade.

Lot #1178 - Fractional Currency - ($ 2,500.00 - $ 5,000.00)
Fr. 1362 50c Third Issue
A really scarce Justice invert with the bronze surcharges on the back upside down. The other notes that are known for this number are all circulated pieces, the last of which sold for over $2000 almost a decade ago. The present example is as gorgeous a Justice note as one could hope to obtain. Bearing excellent overall margins and breathtaking freshness, this should prove to be a very popular piece.

Lot #1183 - Fractional Currency - ($ 900.00 - $ 1,300.00)
Fr. 1372 50c Third Issue Justice
A very desirable note in uncirculated grade. AUs typically sell easily for $500 or more and the couple of "64" graded notes we have seen bring around $2,000 each. This "1" on face fiber paper Justice note is a difficult animal to tame at this level.
Grade: PMG UNC 62
Lot #1184 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 1372 50c Third Issue Justice
Excellent paper for this variety. There are 75 notes recorded with Track & Price.

Lot #1186 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1374 50c Fourth Issue
Undoubtedly the most popular of all the fractional types. This Lincoln note is really bright and fresh, with good color and excellent margins on all sides. An overwhelming majority of Lincoln notes have at least one tightly trimmed margin. We cannot tell what accounts for the AU grade as it looks like a Choice CU piece through the holder. Notes like this tend to bring a lot more than typical money for the grade but we will let the bidders decide.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #1187 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Series 481 25c 6/20/51 - 5/25/54
Pair of notes. Both are crisp, fresh and as bright as the day they were printed. The few auction results we can find show that these sell for a few hundred each. A perfectly matched duo that should make a safe and happy landing in someone's collection.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1188 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Series 481 $1 6/20/51 - 5/25/54
A better piece of MPC that we rarely encounter in such a lofty state of preservation. Bright paper, boardwalk margins and micrometer perfect centering denote a higher grade.

Lot #1189 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)

Lot #1191 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Series 641 5c Replacement 8/31/65 - 10/21/68
A bright and colorful MPC replacement nickel that is well deserving of the Gem grade. The Green Sheet lists this at $200 in CU 60 with no better grade given.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1192 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 700.00 - $ 1,400.00)
Series 641 10c Replacement 8/31/65 - 10/21/68
A magnificent example of this dime replacement that is one of only two CU examples graded, the other a PCGS New 62. The Green Sheet is $670 in Ch. CU 63 grade but it begs the question, "Where are you going to find another this nice?"
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64

Lot #1196 - Military Payment Certificates - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)

A very challenging later MPC replacement note that lists in the Green Sheet for $500 in CU 60 with no higher grade given. The 5 cent and 10 cent replacements appear with far greater frequency than does this half dollar MPC.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ

Fr. 1500* $1 1928 *00000230A
There are only 34 other Fr. 1500 star 1928 $1 Red Seals reported and this is the second lowest serial #230; only serial #101* is lower. The note is new to the census and the grade is VF 30 with 2 pinholes, which I believe are as made. There are only four notes graded higher, a PMG 35, PCGS 40 PPQ, PCGS 63 PPQ and PMG 64. There are also three listed as '30' but none graded by PMG or PCGS. The '40 PPQ' realized $11,750 just 18 months ago.

Lot #1199 - Small Size Type Notes > Legal Tender - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1500 $1 1928 A-A
Truly a monster of a note. Even close study fails to uncover a minute flaw. The color explodes off the note and the embossing is deep enough to hold rain water. Most collectors seek just a single, splendid example for type and this should exceed their expectations. We last sold this note in March 2009 at $862. Since then there have been more high quality examples found.

Two-dollar bills just don't get any better than this one. Solid twos (D22222222A) on a $2 bill is the ultimate combination, and to be on an earlier 1928-D makes it even better.

An attractive, reasonably well centered example of a serial #00000001 note. It may come as a surprise to many, but the BEP regularly "smears" the serial number of many #00000001 notes. The reason isn't totally clear but we've heard the same story several times, that when the block letters are changed, necessitated by a roll over to a new #1 serial number, the BEP presses are cleaned with a solvent, which often leaves residue on the first note printed. Hence over half of the serial #00000001s we have seen over the years display at least some evidence of smearing on either the green and/or black ink on the face of the note. This example is lovely.

The Z-B block is really tough block from which to find quality notes, especially in this top grade. Track & Price shows 11 known notes but one is way out of the serial range so this new discovery does not affect the census number overall. Only three or four of the other 10 are better than this key small size star. Some grades are hard to understand and this is one of them: the best I would grade this, through the holder, would be VF 20 or possibly a Fine 15. A '40 PPQ' brought $19,975 in April 2015. Fr. 1935-D $2 1976 Cleveland D-A Doubled Printing
This is the most important modern era error as a type. The clearly enormous double printing of each part of the third printing is very vivid. This example was Lot 234 of the John Whitney Walters sale in 2004 where it was graded Gem CU and realized $9,200. The note is as lovely now as it was then but a conservative grader may chose to call it a '64' rather than a '65'; either way it's a peach. Also realize that the serial number ends in '44' on top and '40' on the bottom of the two and the district number also appears as '44'.

Only three notes reported in Track & Price in any grade make this an ultra rarity. It is easily conceivable that its value should be far higher as a non-error.
