2015 PCDA Auction > 2015 PCDA Session 3 - US Notes

Lot #1473 - Continental Currency - ($ 4,000.00 - $ 8,000.00)
CC-9 $20 May 10, 1775
Not necessarily the scarcest but certainly the most iconic of all 102 different Continentals due to the marbled border at left. The back is inverted as always with pretty large margins on all sides, including a healthy dose of the left marbled edge. PCGS notes there are splits, tears, silking and minor damage, all of which are problems that are typically seen as there are very few problem free examples known. Most any VF graded marbled border note is worth several thousand dollars at auction.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1474 - Continental Currency - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
CC-22 $2/3 February 17, 1776
Excellent red signature and serial number attest to the originality of this always popular Fugio fractional denomination Continental. Always a four figure note at this grade level.
Grade: PCGS XF 45 PPQ
Lot #1475 - Continental Currency - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
CC-29 $7 February 17, 1776
A lovely early Continental note that would have graded gem if the left margin were a touch wider. PMG has also given the silly comment miscut, which refers to a slightly uneven right border. Gems of this issue and denomination have recently been selling for over $2000 and this note should not be far behind.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1476 - Continental Currency - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
CC-68 $7 May 20, 1777
The May 1777 issue is generally accepted to be the second scarcest of all Continental issues, behind only the fabled Yorktown series of April 1778. A bright and evenly circulated piece with some evidence of light circulation.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1477 - Continental Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
CC-86 $60 September 26, 1778
The highest denomination from this more available Continental emission. Exceptional signatures of Wilson and Little add a lot of pop to this enormously margined note that has some corner handling. A really premium piece in terms of eye appeal.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #1478 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CT-187 40 Shilling June 1, 1775 Uncancelled
Not to be confused with the bevy of uncancelled 1776 notes from this colony. Bright and wonderfully signed with healthy paper surfaces.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #1479 - Colonial Currency > Connecticut - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
CT-214 2 Pence October 11, 1777 Uncancelled
Small change notes from this 1777 issue are far more difficult to locate in their original uncancelled state since most have been slash cancelled. PCGS notes some minor mounting remnants but they do nothing to affect the note's eye appeal. The printing quality is great, the signature and serial number are bold, and the margins are the largest we have seen.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1480 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 1,500.00 - $ 3,000.00)
DE-76 4 Shillings January 1, 1776
Jumbo margins are seen on all sides of this immaculate Delaware note. It has that fresh "cut from the sheet" look about it and probably with good reason. High grade colonial type notes have continued to hold their value during these turbulent times.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1481 - Colonial Currency > Delaware - ($ 700.00 - $ 900.00)
DE-77 5 Shillings January 1, 1776
Another high grade Delaware colonial that has jumbo margins, fresh paper and superb signatures. There isn't much difference between this lot and the previous one except that this note has far better centering and that note has two more points.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1482 - Colonial Currency > Georgia - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
GA-122 $20 May 4, 1778
A larger format Georgia colonial with some light circulation and a ton of eye appeal. On of the signers is William Few, who was a signer of the United States Constitution. Wonderfully embossed as well, leaving your cataloger scratching his head looking for the EPQ designation. Newman lists this at $2500 in EF with no higher grade given.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53
Lot #1483 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
MD-70 $8 April 10, 1774
A superbly signed example with a broad left indent that once resided in the famous Midnight Ride collection.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 55
Lot #1484 - Colonial Currency > Maryland - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
MD-101 $6 August 14, 1776
A typical note from this better issue is a VG-VF example with plenty of problems. Problem-free notes in this state of preservation just don't come along very often. From the John J. Ford, Jr. collection.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1485 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
MA-160 2 Shillings 6 Pence August 18, 1775
The historical vignette of a Minuteman is seen on the back of this commonly named Sword in Hand note. PMG notes there are tape, repairs and sewn together along the center fold. The note is basically intact with not much in the way of visible issues. In the last year we have seen a cut in half example of this denomination, with problems, sell for close to $400.
Grade: PMG VG 8 Net
Lot #1486 - Colonial Currency > Massachusetts - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
MA-179 3 Shilling 4 Pence December 7, 1775
The Minuteman vignette seen on the back (better known as Sword in Hand) is one of the most evocative designs in the arena of colonial currency. PCGS notes there are splits, tears, and repairs, none of which appear to greatly affect the desirability of this piece. PCGS has graded six examples, all apparent grades, and PMG has graded three notes, with the best of those garnering a Fine 15 designation. This is likely one of the best you will find and just a few months ago we saw another sell, also in a PCGS Apparent VF 25 holder, for over $1750.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20
Lot #1487 - Colonial Currency > New Hampshire - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
NH-186 $20 April 29, 1780
Hole Cancel. This note is Top Pop at both services for this highest denomination and also tied for Top Pop across all denominations from this issue, as there are no gems known (there are only a half dozen in CU grades). A superlative example fit for the finest of colonial type collections.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1488 - Colonial Currency > New Jersey - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
NJ-180 15 Shillings March 25, 1776
A really pretty colonial with three huge margins and a tight fourth.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #1489 - Colonial Currency > New York - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)
NY-182 2 Shillings January 6, 1776 Water Works
An absolutely stunning example of one of the scarcer Water Works issues. Behemoth margins, perfect printing and paper quality make one wonder why this didn't garner a gem grade.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1490 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
NC-123 15 Shillings April 23, 1761
Regardless of the technical grade, this is one of the prettiest examples we have seen of any North Carolina colonial. PMG does correctly note some tears but to this cataloger's eye the technical grade is certainly at least XF. Eye appeal sells colonials and this note has it all.
Grade: PMG VF 20 Net
Lot #1491 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 700.00 - $ 900.00)
NC-139 1 Pound December 1771
A high grade type note that would be a perfect fit in any thirteen colony set. The margins and centering are about as good as it gets with beaming originality at every turn.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 67 PPQ
Lot #1492 - Colonial Currency > North Carolina - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
NC-163b $6 Squirrel April 2, 1776
One of the most fascinating colonial issues that exists with 56 distinct different varieties across a wide range of denominations from $1/16 up to $20. One could spend many years just forming a complete collection, of which there are only two documented. A small edge tear is seen at the bottom of this Squirrel note that has excellent printing and signatures. From the John J. Ford, Jr. collection.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 30
Lot #1493 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
PA-172 6 Shillings March 25, 1775
The technical grade is accurate but it belies the true aesthetic charm possessed by this Lighthouse note. Bright paper, ample margins and bold signatures are not often encountered in unison with this note bearing a fairly low serial number 419.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1494 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-190 10 Shillings October 25, 1775
PMG hasn't graded any better than "64" and this must be the prettiest one at that level. There is nothing to dislike about it and it's as original as the day is long.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1495 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-195 30 Shillings December 8, 1775
Gem notes from this December issue are few and far between because the margins are never quite wide enough to allow for such a lofty designation. PCGS has only graded a single gem for the entire series and only five at the "64" grade level.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1496 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-199 6 Pence April 25, 1776
A jumbo sheet margin is seen on this beautiful small change Pennsylvania note.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1497 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
PA-212 9 Pence April 10, 1777
A gigantic selvage is seen at the bottom of this small change note. We saw a few 66 and 67 notes sail well past the $1000 mark just a couple of months ago.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1498 - Colonial Currency > Pennsylvania - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
PA-241 3 Pence April 20, 1781
The technical grade is accurate but that belies the sheer beauty of this better 1781 small change note that looks as if it were cut from a sheet this morning.
Grade: PMG Abt. UNC 53 EPQ
Lot #1499 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
RI-289 $20 July 2, 1780
We don't normally like to quibble with the assessment of the grading services but this grade is simply not telling the whole story. The margins are huge on all sides with the left and bottom margins showing large selvage. If one were to trim them so that the centering were even on all sides then the grade would increase. It doesn't make sense but such is life.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1500 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 2,000.00 - $ 4,000.00)
RI-290 6 Pence May 1786
A vision of loveliness is this lower denomination Rhode Island note that has achieved almost as good a grade as is allowed. We are confident that you will enjoy this note immensely upon entry into your collection.
Grade: PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ
Lot #1501 - Colonial Currency > Rhode Island - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
RI-290 6 Pence May 1786
A top of the line Rhode Island colonial that looks under graded, even for the lofty 66PPQ grade.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1502 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
SC-143 $20 February 14, 1777
The vignette of a bird fleeing its cage is a popular one found on this better South Carolina note. PCGS notes damage and repairs.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 20
Lot #1503 - Colonial Currency > South Carolina - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
SC-147 5 Shillings April 10, 1778
PCGS has only graded one equal to this one and one a point better. Signed by Charles Pinckney, Jr., signer of the United States Constitution, governor of South Carolina and a member of the House of Representatives. A few months ago we saw a PCGS Gem New 66PPQ sell for close to $3000.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65 PPQ
Lot #1504 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
VA-127 $5 October 20, 1777
A beautiful example of this much scarcer low denomination note. Tied with one other at PCGS with the New 62 grade. A bright and superbly printed example that is rare in this grade. PCGS notes minor restorations but we have looked this note over and back with nothing visible through the holder.
Grade: PCGS Apparent New 62
Lot #1505 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
VA-77b 20 Shilling July 17, 1775
An exceptional quality example of this large format note that uses leftover paper from the September 1773 issue of "Ashby notes." PCGS notes some small edge and internal splits as well as minor mounting remnants. In totality, these issues have very little effect on how this note faces up. Countersigned on the back by Robert Carter Nicholas, an important figure in Virginia colonial history. Within the past year we have seen problemed examples, with far lesser eye appeal, broach the thousand dollar barrier with relative ease.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1506 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
VA-172 $2 May 1, 1780
Easily the prettiest Virginia Guaranteed that your cataloger has seen in his innumerable decades in this business. Wonderfully signed, deeply embossed and with huge margins on all sides, including a wide piece of selvage at right. The guarantee on the back is boldly signed by Forster Webb.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #1507 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)
VA-194 $300 October 16, 1780
Tied for Top Pop at PCGS with one other note. Considering how thin and brittle these rice paper notes are it is quite amazing to find this example in such high grade without a hint of a problem.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1508 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
VA-208a $500 March 1, 1781
A very high grade example that is well signed and deeply embossed. PCGS notes minor damage and repairs and they are just that, minor.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Abt. New 53
Lot #1509 - Colonial Currency > Virginia - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
VA-212 $25 May 7, 1781
Between the two grading services they have only seen five examples of this much better $25 denomination note, and we are pretty sure that this is the top of the heap. PCGS notes there are small stains and internal tear but the overall integrity of this sharply printed and well-signed colonial easily overrides those petty detriments.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1510 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1226 3c Third Issue
Demand never seems to sour for gem 3 cent notes. This one has been blessed with excellent centering.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 65 EPQ
Lot #1511 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 650.00)
Fr. 1228 5c First Issue
A widely margined first issue perforated fractional that is one of the nicest we have seen at this grade level. It has been a couple of years since we have seen any gems in the marketplace which leaves this note to fill a big void for one lucky collector.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1512 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1230 5c First Issue
A common first issue fractional note but one that is actually a lot tougher in superb gem grade. A very well centered note with bright yellow paper and wonderfully contrasting brown inks.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ
Lot #1513 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1230 5c First Issue Vertical Strip of Four
A bright and colorful vertical strip of four notes that looks CU at a glance.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1514 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1230 5c First Issue Block of Eleven Notes
An interesting block of eleven notes with a single virtually invisible edge split seen through one of the notes at the left. Otherwise, this is a bright and utterly original block that should see a lot of bidding activity.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 30
Lot #1515 - Fractional Currency - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)
Fr. 1232 5c Second Issue Block of 16 Notes
A block of 16 notes that is four notes shy of complete sheet status. PCGS notes some edge and internal splits, tears, and minor damage. Fractional multiples are always quite popular and we see no reason why this one shouldn't fall into that same category.
Grade: PCGS Apparent VF 25
Lot #1516 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1246 10c Second Issue
Tied for Top Pop at PCGS with one other out of over 100 graded. A real sleeper in this grade due to the fact that these almost always are found with a tight margin on at least one side. This note is as bright and fresh as we could hope to see. We have seen a couple of less than exciting PMG Gem CU 66 EPQ notes sell for over $600 in the past couple of years.
Grade: PCGS Gem New 65
Lot #1517 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,750.00 - $ 3,250.00)
Fr. 1248 10c Second Issue
A very bright and typically centered Fr. 1248 note with bright bronze and crystal clear surcharges. There are two behemoth margins, which include small pieces of the adjoining notes on the sheet, and two tight margins. The origin of this number can be traced back to the 1890 Harlan P. Smith sale of the R.C. Davis collection. Always a solid four-figure note when offered for sale, and certain to perform just as admirably this evening.
Grade: PMG XF 40
Lot #1518 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 900.00)
Fr. 1255 10c Third Issue
As common as these are, examples in 66 or better grade are not that easy to locate and they always have demand from bidders. In the past year we have seen notes in this grade selling in the $400-$600 price range.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1519 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1257 10c Fourth Issue
An exceptionally well-margined and superbly centered example destined for a high-grade fractional type set.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1520 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1266 10c Fifth Issue
A short key Meredith note that looks under graded by approximately four points. Hulking margins are noted on all sides and the centering is perfect.
Grade: PMG Gem UNC 66 EPQ
Lot #1521 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1279 25c First Issue
Two full perforation strips and absolutely gigantic margins are seen on this colorful and original first issue fractional.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1522 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1286 25c Second Issue
A perfectly centered gem from the face with clearly defined back surcharges and majestic purple inks. A better Friedberg number, particularly as one approaches the gem grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1523 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1291 25c Third Issue
An absolutely gorgeous red back Fessenden note with superior color and breathtaking originality.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1524 - Fractional Currency - ($ 800.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1299 25c Third Issue
A much scarcer subtype with solid bronzing on the face. Much brighter and better centered than most that we have seen. PCGS mentions a severed and tape repaired corner, minor stains, and small edge nick.
Grade: PCGS Apparent Abt. New 50
Lot #1525 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)
Fr. 1313 50c First Issue
The scarcest of the sixteen first issue fractional varieties with this solid AU wielding large margins on all sides.
Grade: PCGS Abt. New 53
Lot #1526 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1317 50c Second Issue
The centering is nearly perfect but the margins are not quite broad enough for this note to have qualified for the lofty gem designation. Earlier this year we saw a couple of PMG Ch. CU 64 EPQ examples bring an average of about $500 each.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1527 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1321 50c Second Issue Experimental Back
The surcharges on the back are the same as a regular issue Fr. 1321 note....."R-2-18-63." It is well margined on all sides with a bright bronze oval at the center, covering the middle of the red back design. A rare note with only a couple or so known and of particular interest due to the fact that it is uncancelled.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #1528 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1326 50c Third Issue
This is one of the prettiest Spinner notes we have seen, as it shows boardwalk margins on all sides, bronzing that shines right through the plastic holder and embossing deep enough to swim in. A better "1" on face red back Spinner note that will no doubt sell for closer to gem money.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64 PPQ
Lot #1529 - Fractional Currency - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
Fr. 1327 50c Third Issue
Gigantic margins and cavernous embossing make this tougher "a" on face red back Spinner note a real catch for the one lucky enough to have it land in his arms. We have seen Choice CU 63 notes selling for around $300 with this note being a point better in technical grade and about 10-15 points better than most in terms of eye appeal.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1530 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1328 50c Third Issue
Yet another red back Spinner note that sure looks like a dead ringer for the gem grade. An always popular hand-signed fractional with the Colby-Spinner autograph combination.
Grade: PCGS Very Ch. New 64
Lot #1531 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1329 50c Third Issue
A tougher autographed Spinner variety with the Allison-Spinner combination. It looks Choice CU through the holder since we cannot find any grade-limiting folds.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58
Lot #1532 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1343 50c Third Issue
Bright bronze and excellent margins attest to the originality and overall eye appeal of this note. PMG has made the comment "As Made Ink Drop Out." Maybe the ink dropped out of school and joined the Mafia......that's as logical an explanation as any we can think of.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #1533 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1344 50c Third Issue
A scarce "1" and "a" Justice note that is in a grade we simply never see. PMG notes discoloration which is just some minor oxidation of the back "50" bronze denomination counter.
Grade: PMG Ch. Fine 15 Net
Lot #1534 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 650.00)
Fr. 1349 50c Third Issue
A bright and superbly bronzed, near gem looking example of this much better red back Justice with "1" on face position indicator. In recent years, the examples we have seen in this grade typically sell for around $400 or more. Through the plastic this looks like a solid CU note.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 58
Lot #1535 - Fractional Currency - ($ 400.00 - $ 800.00)
Fr. 1357 50c Third Issue
A better fiber paper Justice type with the net grade being assigned for a missing corner tip. Much better margined than most examples we see with Green Sheet value of a few hundred dollars in this grade.
Grade: PMG XF 40 Net
Lot #1536 - Fractional Currency - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
Fr. 1360 50c Third Issue
A superior example for the Choice CU grade and a better green back Justice note with "1" on face position indicator. Only a smaller left margin keeps the gem grade out of reach.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63 PPQ
Lot #1537 - Fractional Currency - ($ 475.00 - $ 725.00)
Fr. 1360 50c Third Issue
A trio of leviathan margins more than counterbalance the typically tight fourth margin on this deeply embossed green back Justice.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63 EPQ
Lot #1538 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 650.00)
Fr. 1361 50c Third Issue
A faint corner fold is all that keeps this exceptionally well-margined Justice note from reaching the gem grade level. As such, a few extra bids are likely in order.
Grade: PMG Ch. Abt. UNC 58 EPQ
Lot #1539 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 650.00)
Fr. 1364 50c Third Issue
Yet another bright and attractive Justice note that looks like a better grade through the holder.
Grade: PCGS Ch. New 63
Lot #1540 - Fractional Currency - ($ 450.00 - $ 650.00)
Fr. 1365 50c Third Issue
A much better number with green back and "a" on face position indicator. Fresh and bright paper surfaces are highlighted by bronzing that appears brighter than sunlight. A faint corner tip fold accounts for the grade.
Grade: PCGS Ch. Abt. New 55
Lot #1541 - Fractional Currency - ($ 1,000.00 - $ 2,000.00)
Fr. 1374 50c Fourth Issue
Arguably the most popular of all the fractional types, with this one having better margins than most of its peers. Historically, this has been a four figure note or so in this grade.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 63
Lot #1542 - Fractional Currency - ($ 750.00 - $ 1,500.00)
Fr. 1374 50c Fourth Issue
This is actually a very nice example for the Unc 62 grade but the bottom margin is just a hair too tight to allow for a Choice CU designation.
Grade: PMG UNC 62
Lot #1543 - Fractional Currency - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)

T-16 $50 September 2, 1861 Contemporary Counterfeit
Top Pop at both services. One of only five CU examples graded at both services and the nicest one of the group. A lovely example that is destined for the finest of Confederate collections. We have seen inferior examples sell for hundreds of dollars in recent years.

Lot #1550 - Confederate Notes - ($ 1,250.00 - $ 2,500.00)
T-24 $10 September 2, 1861
Any T-24 note above the Very Fine grade is a condition rarity of sorts. A very bright and well-signed note with plenty of embossing visible through the holder. A solid four-figure item to be sure.
Grade: PCGS XF 40
Lot #1551 - Confederate Notes - ($ 500.00 - $ 1,000.00)
T-25 $10 September 2, 1861
Low serial number 214. Although PCGS notes some minor mounting remnants on the back, which are pithy at best in how they affect eye appeal, this is a very high grade T-25 note. Like the previous T-24 note, these are very scarce above VF grade and virtually unknown in CU grade. The couple of XF or AU notes we have seen at auction in recent years easily transcend the thousand dollar barrier.
Grade: PCGS Apparent XF 40
Lot #1552 - Confederate Notes - ($ 650.00 - $ 950.00)
T-26 $10 September 2, 1861
Fine Lace XX. Although there is a propensity for T-26 to land in higher grade holders, this is still a very scarce type above the Very Fine grade. Even though tight in some spots, this note is still about 95% fully framed while being printed on bright paper and with bold signatures.
Grade: PMG Ch. XF 45
Lot #1553 - Confederate Notes - ($ 600.00 - $ 1,200.00)
T-33 $5 September 2, 1861 Contemporary Counterfeit
PCGS hasn't graded any of this caliber and PMG has graded a single note better, although we have a hard time believing it could be any prettier. Huge margins, great centering and splendid ink colors are found on this Samuel Upham lithographed counterfeit.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64
Lot #1554 - Confederate Notes - ($ 700.00 - $ 900.00)
T-39 $100 September 16, 1863 Contemporary Counterfeit
Top Pop at both services. One of only three CU examples graded. Quite frankly this note seems to be a bit under graded as well. It is fully framed with perfect centering, boldly-contrasted printing, bright paper and eye appeal that is simply sensational. The name chosen for the Register, Hall, is a figment of the imagination as no one with that name signed authentic Train notes.
Grade: PMG Ch. UNC 64 EPQ
Lot #1555 - Confederate Notes - ($ 550.00 - $ 750.00)

T-41 $100 November 24, 1862
PF-26 with "T" to the left of the Hoer vignette. Printed on paper with the "CSA" block watermark and a trio of Jackson, MS interest-paid stamps seen on the back. If this is only a "64" then it must be at the top end for the grade. Any CU example of the "T" left of Hoer type is not an easy find.

Lot #1557 - Confederate Notes - ($ 450.00 - $ 850.00)

This PF-5 variety with the left plate letter too low is listed in Fricke as R-10. PMG does have a single note graded 65EPQ with a few others tied at this 64EPQ grade level. Notes in this condition are very scarce to begin with and the opportunity should be seized to obtain one.

Hulking margins are seen on all sides of this Havana Counterfeit which certainly looks under graded by at least a few points. A visually perfect note in almost every sense of the word and, when offered, these sell for several hundred dollars at the very least.

As painfully common as this 1864 Lucy Pickens note is as a Confederate type, it is actually pretty scarce in gem grade. Both grading services share similar statistics.......less than 5% of T-65 notes have achieved a gem grade (and that's for notes actually worth submitting).

Stonington Stonington Bank $10 Remainder
This is singlehandedly the nicest example we have seen of this Stonington Bank remainder that is rarely seen in superb gem 67 grade, with a well-deserving "68PPQ" being even more difficult to encounter. The $10 denomination has always been in much greater demand due to the upper left vignette of a whale capsizing the boats of harpooners. The only other result we can locate in recent years was a 67PQ example that sold for $1,150 back in 2012.

He was elected mayor in 1862 and in the Fort Scott Bulletin, on November 8, 1862, it stated there were several banking officers in town but none better. It also stated that he issued fractional notes out of necessity for lack of change. (Information obtained from the Kansas Paper Money book by Steve Whitfield.) A nice looking remainder note. The only other recent record we can find was serial number 74, also in a PCGS VF 25 holder, selling for $658. This note is prettier and has a lower two digit serial number.

Lot #1619 - Obsolete Notes & Miscellaneous Items > Virginia - ($ 5,000.00 - $ 7,000.00)
Richmond Virginia Treasury Note $50
The 1861 Series of Virginia Treasury Notes is considered the first true war issue with two different acts authorizing $7,000,000 in various denominations between $5 and $500. These notes accrued 6% interest for 12 months on denominations of $20 and above. These were printed by Hoyer & Ludwig and there were 6,150 $100s issued by late 1863; only 83 were outstanding. The $50 had 12,300 printed with 268 outstanding in 1863, over 150 years ago. This is a great Virginia rarity dated August 13, 1861. Fully signed and issued with serial #1019.

Cover Note from U.S. Paper Money Errors. Museum-worthy cutting error with everything in its favor: Gem New grade, gargantuan fold-over, a star/replacement note on redesigned $100. In Memphis, we sold a smaller cutting error on a non-star for $5,875, which seems like a bargain place to open this lot. This exact note appears of the cover of the 4th edition of United States Paper Money Errors, released just weeks ago. Fr. 1657* $5 1953-B* *-A
The replacement notes from this final $5 silver certificate series are much scarcer than the others, and they always seem to show up in either Very Fine or Gem CU grade. This puts a lot of upward price pressure on solid XF and AU notes as collectors struggle to find a price point between grade and value that makes sense to them. To that end, the only other recent example we can find, aside from this one, is a PMG XF 40 that sold for close to $8,000 back in 2012.

Here is a beautiful, high quality and ultra rare San Francisco star 1929 FRBN. While the printing indicates 12,000 this is a new serial #L00002526*. The low is #51 and the previous high was #L00003093*. This is now at least the seventh star as neither number from the small size reference are shown in Track & Price. Fr. 2101-A* $50 1928-A* Boston A-*
This Boston star is certainly one of the Rocky Mountain Collection's top rarities. It's only 59 numbers away from the only serial number listed for this ultra rare star. The note is evenly circulated with a tiny ink mark on the back, slightly rounded corners and quarter folds but a very desirable star note rarity. Stars are only listed from Boston and Chicago for this series. From the Rocky Mountain Collection.

Light Green Seal. For the 64PPQ grade this note is exemplary in every sense of the word. The originality is palpable and the paper is as bright as the midday sun. Only a smaller bottom margin limits the grade.

Fr. 2408 $1,000 1928 A-A
A visual delight; as one studies the surfaces of this stellar showpiece original embossing blasts through the holder from every angle, the vibrant yellow-gold overprint is stunning, the margins offer exceptional width and balance for the issue, and the paper is free of fault. Of the 56 known in all grades (including those ensconced in museums), this is among the finest certified by the major services. One of the three finer cannot, in the opinion of this cataloguer, hold a candle to this wholly original specimen; but, the other one lacks the 'PQ' designator. On the other hand, a magnificent Gem New 65 PPQ is currently on the market priced at $265,000 retail; for those seeking only the finest, that Gem example could forever make a worthy acquisition. For those collectors preferring not to reach so high, this accurately graded Ch. About New 58 PPQ should prove a serious contender. A PMG Abt. UNC 58, without the cherished 'EPQ' designator, recently brought $42,593. In a market clamoring for, and willing to pay for, originality this wholly original piece should fare better.
